I was wondering if people project their personalities onto their vehicles. I usually park my car away from the other autos so it can have some space around it and not be crammed in with others. A co-worker said he was going out to move his car closer to the other cars so it would not be alone. He is a very social person and needs to talk, even to people he does not like (me).

Does your car reflect your personality?

I suppose in a way it does, I need some security in my life so the car I drive provides a kind of security in terms of antilock brakes and all-wheel-drive so as to be safer in the winter and wet. but in an aesthetic sense, the car that would reflect my personality better would be an AMC Pacer, or a pink VW Karmann-Ghia convertible or VW beetle or microbus.

Not quite. The Gremlin is considered to be a sub-compact car (the Gremlin was the first American built sub-compact by the way) while the pacer is more of a small car and is larger than the Gremlin. They also are very different style wise as seen in the picture. Here is a Gremlin for comparison.


Anyway, regarding the OP's question; I think that while my car Rosalind doesn't necessarily reflect my personality, we do share a lot in common with each other. She is a 1986 AMC Eagle wagon. There are a lot of misconceptions about AMC, like people thinking they were bad cars or ugly cars, just like there are a lot of misconceptions about Aspergers. Some people really appreciate her while others think that she is a piece of junk that should be crushed, just like how some people really admire Aspies for their skills while others want to 'cure us'. She is also a car you don't see that much anywhere, she is unique, like us Aspies.

I always wondered out of all the cars I could have chosen or afforded, why I had my heart set on an AMC Eagle. Overtime it has occurred to me that me and her share the same traits like those listed above.
Here is a recent (i.e. today ) picture of Rosalind. I just added those headlight shields a few days ago. I think she represents me and my Aspie personality quite well.

Thank you. Still a bunch of things I need to do, but as she is she is a pleasure to drive knowing me as a unique person is driving a unique car.

I'm sure there are others. I am a unique case in that cars are my Aspie obsession and I really am a car guy, so it was something unique and out of the ordinary or nothing. I think there has been a thread about what we drive somewhere here.

I suppose it reflects my personality in the sense that it's merely a practical transportation appliance and shows that I don't value showing off a nice car for any reason. It's a 1990 Honda Civic hatchback with 467k kms on it that I crashed twice in December (sliding on ice) & yet it's still going like the energizer bunny so now I'm hoping it lasts at least until I hit 500k kms with it just to see it tick over half a million. It also reflects my attitude towards money as I save and invest towards other goals vs. spend money on "things" I don't value. I suppose it also reflects the fact that I don't give a flying F what my car says about me lol. And also that I don't need to drive a flashy car in order to get laid. :p I guess it says a few things about me.

wish I was that smart when I was your age

I wish I was that smart about cars, driving, and values when I was younger!! ! I'd be tens of thousands, if not $100K+, ahead in terms of net worth.. but live & learn I suppose. Can't change the past! Gotta live in the present moment and plan ahead for the future and all that. What's done is done and I hope to never make the same $$ mistakes with cars again. Ever!

Driving is quite expensive here. We have the highest gas prices in North America. Insurance prices are quite high, too. BUT, driving this little shitcan w/ bare bones insurance at maximum discount doesn't cost me very much at all - a few hundred dollar a month or so.. that's a far cry from the ~3x that it would cost me to drive a typical brand new econo car.

I'm going to drive it as long as it lasts & I can get away with it - ie until work projects necessitate buying a truck. And then when I do buy a truck it will be an old one, likely dual fuel propane/gas, & for cash vs. having a loan - still going w/ only what I Need vs. blowing money on crap I don't Need.

This is a great topic. My car is a Subaru Baja *points to avatar*, and I fell in love with the Baja for the exact reason that it fits my personality so well. It's different, very rare, and its design turns heads in a way that it's almost like a big "f**k you" to the neurotypical dominated society. (I love the design. Most cars on the road these days are very boring looking).

My car is definitely aloof like me. It stands out in a crowd but is anti-social at the same time. I make sure to park it far away from other vehicles when I go to the YMCA or even the grocery store (especially minivans, SUVs, or any vehicles with those "stick figure families" on them), because other people don't give a crap about banging their car doors into the cars next to them or letting their kids bang into another car during the "kid loading/unloading" circus show that became the result of this modern parenting culture. I baby my car to death in that aspect because I worked my ass off to make my dream of owning a Baja come true. I got it in early 2014.

My thoughts exactly TheTigress! My car Rosalind is different, unique, and gets positive attention just when I am out and about, even when driving. She's a hit at classic car shows because she is something different from the usual Camaro, Mustang, Corvette, Thunderbird, or old car with a 350 V8 thrown in it. As I mentioned earlier, my car really reflects my Aspie personality and embodies my Apsie obsession, and I worked my rear off to save up for her and the restoration costs which I knew that buying a 25+ year old car would entail. I wholeheartedly agree with how cars look nowadays. I think it is the kind of thing where cars get better with age. My car at one time was not considered anything special and was seen as a simple family car. Heck, there was a time where the cars of the 50's were seen as worn out used cars that should be sent to the junkyard.

if I had more moolah I'd have me a mint-condition AMC pacer with "indian print" upholstery.
