Managed to lose my irreplaceable transit pass tonight. It was still worth about $1100 or so. Must have lost it pulling my phone out of my pocket to check the time. Irreplaceable - they said they can't cancel it and reissue it like other pass types due to the nature of it being printed paper vs. electronic. So, unless I miraculously find it tonight or someone turns it in and the transit people contact me, it's gone and I'm out $1100 or so. F*ck. Kinda rather choked.. :/

Been there f$ck that... Mine was cancelled along with those of my entire office by my old boss. I could buy a spare car for what the damn things cost.

The really annoying part is that our transit system has just switched over to these electronic rf cards that can be registered, cancelled & reissued if they're lost or stolen... except for this type of pass, which is about the most valuable at $1360 for an 8 month 3 zone (all access) pass. Quite ridiculous that they're not issued on the same system as the new inexpensive stuff that can be cancelled and reissued if it's lost or stolen.

I know they said they can't reissue it.. but I'm still going to phone and complain and point the above out to them. Maybe the squeaky wheel gets the grease..?

I think calling them is a good idea, just in case they can do something about it after all, or someone happened to find it but they haven't called you.

Yep.

I submitted a lost property form online just in case, by some miracle, someone turns it in.

Then I called a customer service line and they said I had to contact the office that issued that pass. I expressed my frustration that even the lowest dollar value new electronic card can be registered, deactivated, and reissued if lost or stolen, yet these $1360 passes aren't issued on electronic cards so they don't have the same simple procedure to replace them. The rep told me they're still working on how to get those cards issued on the new electronic cards.. and once they can be, they will switch over. So, I just emailed the office to inquire.. my best guess is, that even though the pass was issued with my name on it, they're going to say that there's nothing they can do to replace it at all right now. My hope is that they say that once they CAN put those passes on an electronic card, that they'll be able to issue me one with the remaining time period left on it. That would certainly be better than losing out entirely.

Very frustrating. The pass began November 1st, so I've only had it for 3 weeks of the 8 months it's valid for.. meaning I got about $127.50 worth of value out of it. If that's all I can get, I'd have been better off taking the $200 in cash option for my car when I scrapped it instead of the 8 month transit pass. :/ Hopefully I only have to pay for transit for a couple months while they work on the solution of how to get these long term passes onto the new RF cards. Time will tell.. but needless to say I'm not very happy about this. Such a waste of money/potential savings! My plan was to take transit for 8 months, then buy a decent vehicle. Now those plans might change depending on a number of factors. If I can't get a replacement at all, then I might be in the market for a beater car again in a couple months. Hmmmm, decisions decisions.. depends on so many factors. Ah well, for now I don't have uninvested cash on hand to buy and insure a car, so no matter what I'm taking the bus/train for the foreseeable future - I'll just have to pay $$ for it; max $11/day round trip for the rest of the month, $170/month for a pass.

Yep. But I've done everything I can to contact transit lost and found and the office that issues that type of pass etc to see if I might be able to get a replacement once they shift to the new technology in the new year.. so, I'm trying not to really waste any time thinking about it anymore. It is what it is. s**t happens.

Hell, it's not the most expensive mistake I've ever made and probably won't even rank in the top 10 of my life. I've had car accidents that cost plenty more money, made some investment mistakes that may cost me plenty more (but others done right that should pay off way more in the long run) & while I'll try to mitigate risks in the future, I HOPE that I work myself into a financial position where I can afford to take risks and make great returns, but also afford to lose significant sums here and there when things don't quite work out the way they were planned. That's life. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.. can't stop playing the game just because you've got to take your lumps every now and again. So long as I'm moving a few steps forward for every kick in the nuts backwards, I'm ok with taking some losses here and there.

But yeah, still sucks no matter how much money one has or doesn't have.. it still stings to lose ~$1200. At least it's not something I have to pay all at once & I'm simply back to paying for a monthly transit pass at $170. Hoooopefully when the new cards get issued I can get one for the remaining time up until June 30th whenever that happens.. not likely for a few months yet, but hey, I'll take what I can get.

Time for coffee and brunch, then continue forgetting about this stuff I can't change while I get a few things done around the house and get some tools/gear etc all ready to load up in a borrowed van to head off to my next adventure in the morning! Starting a brand new job tomorrow that I am pretty stoked to go to! Getting back into construction by joining a crew renovating a 110 year old mansion in a very beautiful very wealthy part of our incredibly picturesque city. 8) Losing $1200 can't shake the smile off my face that this change brings! :) Liiiitttle bit nervous - hoping my skills and experience are at least up to par with their expectations & that I can learn anything else I need to on the fly... so far I've managed to be able to do that in virtually any job in any industry, especially over the last few years, sooo hopefully it continues on that I can do anything - all I need are the resources and the process. But still.. gonna be those first day/new job nerves to work through. Ah well, good thing I like a challenge. :P

You probably didn't keep the receipt, I assume.

Can't they trace your transit card, somehow?

There was no cash purchase. It's value is $1360. I took it in lieu of $200 cash scrap value for my car when I scrapped it through a pseudo-gov't sponsored program. I have the email receipts and the pass had my name printed on it, but because it was a paper printed pass vs. the new electronic ones it can't be deactivated and so anyone can use it... since transit employees almost never check id's to see that they match the passes. Stupid system.

There's still a chance it may have been turned in to lost and found (not likely) and also that when they get the passes onto electronic cards that I may be able to get the remaining time issued to me IF they make a switch from paper to the new RF cards.
