Once I ranted at one of my friends at how much I want to punch a bouncer (because they can be rude to me)

My friend then said "if you fight them you will end up in a coffin"

Could you elaborate on what he meant?

You will lose the fight.
Badly.

I don't know why he said it though because I workout at the gym a lot and train in self defense and hand to hand combat.

Bouncers have a lot of practice at beating the crap out of people.

Best to just punch a road sign and sleep it off.

Self defence is a different thing entirely to actively picking a fight with bouncers.

Remember: Bastards have brothers.

Practice at beating the crap out of people? Ummm in the south of England where I live a bouncer can lose his job if he beats the crap out of someone so I don't think that's true. From what I have seen they restrain people not actually punch them etc......

While true that they will seek to avoid violence when dealing with troublesome punters, if you hit one, they will drag you into an alley outside of CCTV and kick the living daylights out of you.
Never happened to me, but I've seen it more than a few times.

Best left alone, there is nothing to be gained from fighting a bouncer and his mates.

Obviously if they were in a group I would get destroyed. That's just common sense.

They could have ties to the underworld,
Bouncers lead a strange lifestyle where they go to the gym in the day and work a minimum wage job for a few hours at night, there is plenty of potential there for them to get involved in the criminal underworld,
It's just a bad idea to get involved, they are really good at recognizing people too.

Police turn a blind eye to what they do

I used to be friends with someone who worked as a bouncer at one of the local bars in my hometown. Basically, as long as you respect them, they should respect you. If you're doing something that's pissing them off, then it's best to leave them alone and not question it. It sucks, but their job is to keep order. Bouncers deal with some really rough individuals, who will try picking fights with them or pulling weapons, so they have to be prepared to whale on someone to keep the peace.

TL;DR don't pick a fight with a bouncer, just don't. He'll beat the s**t out of you if you do.

The bouncer has the ability to break every bone in your body.

Why? There not superhuman

I lift weights at the gym and practise martial arts/combat there is no reason why the average bouncer should have the upper hand against me :?

Some might carry self-defense weapons like pepper-spray or tasers.

Do you really want to get in trouble over some insignificant tiff with a bouncer? If you lay a finger on them chances are good that you're going to get arrested and/or get beaten up. Don't risk it.
