I think its awesome there are so many Brits here at WP. I really want to visit over there. I think Americans get an idea sometimes that they are the only people that exist in the world. But I like to remember that my heritage is from England. That's what most of American culture is based on. Oh, I also love the Aussies. They are like a cross between Brits and Americans. They've got the Biritish culture plus the rugged outdoorsman type that America is.

The Australians aren't really like the British. They're not. They live out in the desert and, from what I'm told, don't share a lot with Britain any more apart from the language (and a lot of British ex-pats). I'm told that New Zealand is more like Britain and has a similar climate.

Also, England is very different depending on where you go. I'd feel like I was in a foreign country if I went to London for example so there's lots of things to be looking at and taking note of.

hmm, well I guess thats why I need to visit those places to see what they are really like

I know Australia is pretty different than England, but I get the impression that they are more similar than the Americans are at least, even if they are real diffferent. And of course the climate is very different. I mean, we don't have tea time over here, my Australian friends do.

And of course America has a bit more diverse ethnicities. Its primarily the English but we've also got lots of Italian, African, German, etc. and we've had more time to mix things up. Australia got settled a lot later and is made up of more English colonists

Oh, we have tea. If tea isn't made in our house by 6:15pm all hell breaks loose. In many families in northern England, tea is an institution.

Which reminds me, I've got to make mine right now.

England has been on the decline for many years.

Why do white people "Anglo-Saxons" Focus so much on skin color? I saw a posting where gentlemen wanted to know if an avatar of a guy with makeup on as a black face minstrel was ok to post. I thought to myself would an avatar of a furnace chamber with Jewish people lined up in front be ok as well because I thought it looked cool? We do not know what a swastika means to a Jewish person or the amount of suffering endured by the African Americans...How can people find the determent of others be amusing in any fashion? Being African American and having many races in my blood line keeps me completely oblivious to taking race or gender as a factor when communicating or assuming someone’s capabilities, professionalism or otherwise. You know there are people of all nations that come to this site. It is a privilege to be able to discuss our problems and what we have to deal with when it comes to AS. Why not be united in that common likeness and grow from one another experiences. You never know how some of these posts can negatively affect our fellow HUMAN who has to deal with the many complexities of our plight. Hence the situation that took place in the United State University of Virginia, and hence the type of situations that cause people to feel that it is better to kill themselves in an effort to kill others.

Please tell me that this basic concept has passed some of your thought process?

mrdtlv,I think the term 'Anglo Saxon' has been misinterpreted which is unfortunate.
The original Angles and Saxons being the Germanic tribes that settled in what became England,the thread is only about English heritage,nothing more than that.
Personally,I'm Scottish (albeit a quarter English) so technically I'm in an ethnic minority in the UK myself,but every country is multi-cultural nowadays.As you say,we're all
human which is the main thing,but I don't see any offence in recognising the
diversity as long as no-one is really implying that one culture is better than another.
Your post will have got people thinking anyway,which isn't a bad thing.

Because they are a good band.
Sometimes i get a tune in my head ( used to have Steelworker playing i my head) and will change my avatar or signature accordingly.

I just got back from seeing LOW. As expected they were very good.
So i may be changing my avatar to something by LOW, when i can be bothered.

Or do you mean because they are american ( and so are LOW and lots of other great artists); when i was slating US culture ?
I was thinking more about MTV and McDonalds, and the general dumbing down of TV and movies.
I blame the US for this, but of course there are still some great stuff coming out of there ( just not on MTV).

I mean it is just not cool nowadays to be intelligent.
British people are given chavs as role models, any show of intelligence may be seen as weakness or weirdness.
When i went to school ( many years ago), it was never seen as cool to be clever. But i never had to act like i was stupid. I think it may be harder for kids nowadays.
Dunno, if i can blame americans for this, but i think it is a corolary (sp?).

I have been to England and have thought about immigrating to England (or at least Great Britain) before. Now, with foreigners blowing up subways, poverty and crime rampant, and the rise of Chav culture, I fear that the new multicultural British state just wouldn't fit the mental image I've had of England since childhood, an image that was formed by episodes of The Avengers and Are You Being Served? and movies such as The Great Muppet Caper, 101 Dalmations, A Christmas Carol, and the James Bond series.

I do believe that England and New Zealand probably do share more in common than England and Australia. Roger Bannister's inspiration as a runner was New Zealand's Jack Lovelock, who won the 1,500 meter gold medal at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. Both Lovelock and Bannister were physicians.

I am not English, (my background is German and Italian), but I am fascinated by England. I have a lot of friends from England on my cat site, too.

mrldtv, you misunderstand me entirely. This has nothing to do with race, it has to do with culture. I agree that our skin color is not what bonds us together, it is our experience as humans. But within that, there are other factors that bind us together as well. Skin color should not be a dividing line, but culture DOES make a person relate to another more in one area. And of course in other ways I share more in common with a black American than a white Briton, because we are both Americans, whereas white britons come from another country. I am just pointing out one area that I like England for, and that is its culture. I would have no problem with an Asian or an African coming on here and talking about a love for their ethnic culture.


There is even a culture here at wrongplanet. We have aspergers or autism here and so we share something in common. I relate more to some people here than NTs, even though I share the human experience with NTs as well.

But it seems that it is politically incorrect these days for a white person to talk about being proud of their heritage--I'm not talking about being proud of ones skin color, no one should be proud of how much melanin they have in their skin or the color of their eyes---I'm talking culture. But these days many people act like being white is something to apologize for, and as a corollary, culture that originates with whites is also something that shouldn't be proud of. But then we have black history month---I don't have a problem with it, but it is an example of pointing out peoples skin color as something to be proud of as a corollary to the persons accomplishments, rather than pointing out the person as an American or a human being.
