suppose i plan to go to a foreign country late this summer. ideally, i'll be alone.

this is in europe, a place nobody in my family has been. we only travel to mexico, that's the farthest.

my dad says he will need to go with me, citing my forgetfulness in rushed situations (which this is clearly not, what with the months of planning)...

being alone in a new place is a source of immense joy for me. that's at risk now, but at this point i'd rather stick to that, than not go at all.

i'll be 19 at that point, and otherwise i'm very good with planning and avoiding trouble, if a bit naive.

am i unreasonable for wanting to go alone, or is he being too cautious?

Difficult to say.
How well does your Dad know you?

I don't think it's unreasonable for you to want to go alone.
It's also not unreasonable for your dad to be concerned about you going alone.
Could you reach a compromise?
Maybe he could travel with you, but plan some solo exploration time as well.

Maybe you could use some sort of technological device as a compromise.. ie one of those little square gps tracker things. Stick it inside a money belt or somewhere where it will always be on your person. If anything were to happen and you got lost or needed to have someone sent to help you out in any way, even from half way around the world your father could pinpoint your location and relay it to local emergency services. You'd have the thrill of travelling solo, and he'd have the comfort of being able to check in and see exactly where you are at any time w/o the whole having to be there thing. Maybe something like that could work for both of you?

Well, do you know anyone in this country you're going to? If you do, you'll only be alone, traveling TO and FROM (assuming they'll meet you at the airport).

I can see BOTH sides of this. There's waaaaay too many things (bad) going-on in the world, so I can totally understand where your Dad's coming from, and I like Raleigh's idea (your Dad's gonna totally get on your nerves, though)----BUT, I LOVE traveling alone, so I can see your side too.

Where about in Europe are you planning? If it's somewhere like England, France, Italy, Turkey you could get away with skype each day.

Alternatively he could come but stay in a different hotel and have his own little holiday so you can go solo but if anything goes wrong he isn't tooo far away.

I would suggest how're visiting the contract with someone before going to it alone just because then you can get used to the country.

If you do plan going solo research the area with your dad to show him it is a safe area and that would make him more willing to let you go.

thanks for yall's feedback. 8)

@Alliekit: it's a trip to the balkans, will be spending some time, hopefully, at the dalmatia shore, otherwise zagreb, mostly. he's been looking up the city, having soem trouble and asking me how to spell the names. :)

@Raleigh: that's the plan right now.

@goldfish: i like that idea, i was already planning on giving him local emergency contacts should i ever get in really big trouble, but i worry about the language barrier. also, he doesn't know anything about the area, yet, so it would be hard for him to know if i were in a bad area or not.

@Cat: i do. there'll be some meetings, not sure yet how much of the time there it'll take up, but otherwise i'll be touring around solo. my dad doesn't trust this person. perhaps not saying much, he trusts very few people.

he will indeed get on my nerves, probably, through no fault of our own.

how can i blame him though? he merely is fulfilling a biological instinct. though he "swears" he'll try and stay out of my way.
