I believe in ghosts.
My nan died before I was born, but when I was three years old I went to my mother three times telling her that there was a lady in the living room. I don't remember all three incidents, but I remember a lady sitting on the sofa, and as I walked in she held out her hand and said, "Who's this then?" and was smiling at me. I wasn't one to take stranger's hands or sit on a strangers lap (when people I didn't know came over to our house I wouldn't even walk past them to get to one of my parents). I took her hand and she sat me on her lap. That's all I remember. It wasn't like a ghost, it was like there was a real, solid person there.
The first two times my mum told me off for saying such things, and ignored it. The third time she came with me to see. When we went back into the living room the lady was gone. I remember this because I remember thinking that to get out of the house she would have had to walk behind me so surely I would have heard her or seen her, and to close my front door you have always had to slam it because of the kind of lock/latch we have, so she could not have gotten out without us knowing. She also would not have been able to get in without my mum knowing, but at the time I didn't think of that.
My mum showed me a picture and I told her that was the lady (my nan, who I never knew).
Years later I spoke about it with my mum and described the clothes the woman had been wearing and my mum cried because I was describing clothes her mum often wore (even down to her tights, which I would have never seen in a picture).
Sometimes people don't believe me when I tell this story, or decide that at three years old I would not be able to remember that when I have memories from being as young as two and a half (I remember visiting my brother in hospital when he was born). Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I would ask that they still remain respectful of my own opinion of my own experience.
Once we stayed at a hotel type place when we went to my cousin's christening. It was quite an old fashioned place and my cousins discovered some small passageways and small doorways (where it had been built years ago when people where smaller). At night time I heard a little boy crying. Although there was one family staying there with two sons I had the feeling that it wasn't them - the sound was coming from the wrong direction and they were both old enough to not be crying at night, when they would have been sharing a room with their parents. It also sounded like it was more out in the open (instead of being seperated by my door, the distance between my room and their's on the floor above, and their own door, it sounded like the sound was coming from down the stairs or the corridor). I did have the feeling that it might be a ghost, but had no real reason to think that.
The next day a worker was talking to some members of my family about strange happenings in this hotel/B&B place. She said that people who worked there had sometimes seen a little boy sitting on the stairs crying in the night.
Possibly a big coincidence, but I much prefer the idea that I heard the ghost.
