^ Presumably you're referring to this experience as a form of 'madness'?

For me the early 1980s, up to perhaps 1983, were the last time that the British singles charts were worth following. I thought the best groups were synthpop outfits like The Human League, OMD and The Teardrop Explodes, though even some of the 'throwaway' stuff from the likes of Dollar and Duran Duran was very listenable. I didn't find the music of Madness really matched up to these standards: additionally for some reason their videos annoyed me, especially the lead singer, and I also associate them in my memory with the group Bad Manners, which doesn't help.

As a musical term for sure, "the '80s" imply the late '70s and early '90s. You can think of them as tapers of this golden decade.
