Why do Walmart stores bother with having so many checkouts at front? They never have them all open. Not even around Christmas time.

Because checkouts depend on technology. As technology changes it helps to be able to bring new registers online while still running the old. So you need more checkouts to handle both the old and new. As well as having spares while having to fix the electronics during normal times.

It might be an illusion. Supermarkets could be putting in more than will ever be manned so when shoppers go in they think, "This is an popular place. All these checkouts must mean they are doing something right."

Then maybe it becomes a pissing contest between the different chains.

All stores are like that. And banks are even worse.

I can't speak for Walmart since I'm not American, but at my ASDA they have so many checkouts because the shop is simply that busy they'll all be used.
And if the till is closed - maybe the staff operating that till is going on break.

They used to have alot more checkouts open at a time & even had a sign that said they would open a new register after so many customers in a line. That was a LONG time ago thou. Years before I worked there.
