Why does a "fat chance" and a "slim chance" mean the same thing and why are a "wise man" and a "wise guy" opposites?

being that the main [non-mobster] definition of "wiseguy" is a person who speaks and behaves as if they know more than others - a tiny germ of an answer would be - a synonym for "guy" would be "joe schmoe" or "joe blow" or the like, an utterly generic or even mediocre fellow, as distinguished from the norminally respectable "man." so in that light, calling somebody a "wise guy" is like saying "big m***et" - a "whoop-de-doo" kinda smart-alecky thing.

I think fat chance is just a sarcastic way of saying slim chance.

If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it?
