I hate needing to have a key to use a public restroom.

The key has to be set down somewhere in that bathroom and i have to hold it on my way out after washing my hands.

Well... I feel the same about having to touch the door handle on the way out. I tend to use the little finger of my left hand to open the door... I never said I wasn't weird!
You may also want to carry a small bottle of hand sanitiser gel around with you... but best if you use it discretely.

Look at it this way: how much dirtier and messier would that bathroom be if it wasn't locked? How often would you go in and find no toilet paper, no running water, god-knows-what on the seat (not suggesting anyone should sit in a public restroom, but rather that it's very hard to hover a safe distance over unidentifiable filth without a good antigravity device.)

Or be mugged, or worse, by someone in there, lying in wait?

Stuff happens. Realistic alternative scenarios can put smaller annoyances in perspective...

PS I'm an old lady with kidney stones. It annoys me when I'm in need and the restroom is locked, but it annoys me a lot less when I have the key and know I'm relatively safe while I'm in there.

I don't really use those types of restrooms NewTime so i cant really speak from experience but I'll give my opinion. The 3 jobs I had were cleaning related & cleaning the bathrooms were part of the job. They weren't locked & they did get really filthy sometimes. So I agree with Esmerelda that the locked 1s are probably cleaner so it's kind of a trade off. I'm also very far from a germaphobe & things that bother lots of other people don't bother me too much. I'm defiantly not as careful as the average person but I hardly get sick. However I can understand why others have a desire or need for cleanliness. After your done washing your hands, perhaps you could pick the key up with a papertowel or toilet paper or maybe you could carry napkins with you. My girlfriend carries a small bottle of GermX in her purse & she'll put it on a toilet seat before sitting on it & she'll use it on her hands after she comes back from the bathroom(she still washes her hands thou). Her bottle of GermX is small enough to fit in a pocket.
