Exactly as the title says.

I will start off with this photo, which was taken after a huge explosion during the Battle of Messines during World War I in 1917, leaving behind a massive crater. It was the largest man-made explosion until the invention of the atomic bomb.

Because Messines was apart of the German defensive lines. And it took hard work. In total, it took two years to prepare, with 1 million tons of explosives, which filled 21 different mines.
