WP median age - high?

serious question.


i don't know if i've come across another website where the median age seems to be as high as it is here.


it is because this is a web forum and most younger people have moved on to different platforms? is autism discussion just inherently a matter for the aged?


or what? i want to know because i seriously feel out of place here and i'm not even that young.

Because it is a forum is one probable reason. Probably because WP has been around the longtime members who were young have grown old. Many members because they are autistic stay out of loyalty, habit etc. Because it is arguably the largest online autistic space it is going to draw a larger group of people.

Good question! Let me change my diaper, have a Boost Plus, and think on that awhile.

There’s lots of young people on WP.

If you go into something like the music subforum, you might find more young people than in PPR.

Perhaps a mix of people using trendy platforms and using autism as a slur therefor painting it in a negative light, thus the younger generation is not being as open with it as a result? Maybe I am completely wrong, regardless I am sorry you feel out of place. I don't care how old you are, I think you are awesome and I am glad you are here. I have no doubt many more feel the same way about you Kip.

I've been here six years. Having seen some ups and downs in my life (though lately my life has been pretty stable), I don't intend on leaving here. I'm 31 now, but yet I don't feel 31.

Like someone else said, I don't really care how old people are, unless they're like 13 and I have to remember not to swear or say inappropriate things, and at least appear like a decent human being.

My chronological age doesn't affect my immaturity, at least.

If all other factors were equal, a bias towards older members would be expected. Excluding carers/parents, who are presumably adults anyway, only people older than the age at which they first identified as (possibly) autistic are likely to become members. The technology and language skills required to use a forum also bias the membership towards those with less severe intellectual and language disabilities; precisely those for whom diagnosis is more likely to come later in life. People who stay around for a while don't get any younger while they're here, either!

Quite so, Trog. I must stay that I am feeling less and less like staying around, the Trumpian level of nastiness has increased so much and has become such a destructive influence, this is not what I joined this site to experience, and the Trumpism combined with the sexism, racism, misogyny, ageism and general hate virus has become so toxic that its a health hazard now - at least to and for me - not a support site.

Most people here are not of the Trumpian persuasion.

I’m not even sure if the over 30s are in the majority. Though they do have influence more than their actual numbers would suggest.

It's because I've been here for 14 years and I don't plan on leaving. I don't have to wear a mask for anybody who posts on WP. I can be myself all the time, here. People here understand my moods that come with most holidays except for Christmas. I love Christmas. This is the place where I took off a mask two years ago, in January.
