That can't be right, he once sang a song telling kids to stay away from strangers, even though they might seem nice.
Because most kids are really dumb and think strangers are always look and act like evil cartoon villains instead of ordinary-looking people who seem very nice. 
Of course, most kids are really kidnapped and abused by people they actually know, especially their own close relatives. The whole stranger danger thing of the 80's and 90's has left a permanent mark on society.

A few days ago I heard an urban myth that Barney was inspired by a serial child killer who would dress up in a purple dinosaur costume to attract kids, and then he'd go to parks and playgrounds, kidnap children, and then force them to act happy. If they didn't act happy he would kill them.
But that's just one of the many myths surrounding Barney, and it's not surprising since a lot of older kids and adults cannot stand him.
