It's like the word Asperger's. It's acceptable for aspies to make fun of how it sounds, but if an NT were to do so it would be offensive.

My dad was once referred to as an "island n*****" by my racist uncle because was Hawaiian.
I thought it was a pretty stupid insult. I mean Hawaiians aren't even black.
