Virtue Signalling.
Virtue Signaling is the conspicuous -- but essentially useless -- expression of moral values to show off how much more moral you are than everybody else.
Some forms of Virtue Signaling include, but are not limited to:
• "Armchair Warriors" speaking out in support of military activity
• Celebrity speeches of a social or political nature during award shows
• Demonstrating against Washington by protesting in California
• Offering "thoughts and prayers" after a tragedy
• Participating in the Ice Bucket Challenge
• Politicians pandering to constituents on ideological issues
• Professing radical aims without taking any action to realize them
Thus, the basic concept of Virtue Signaling is that the person is onlyexpressing support without actually providing support to give the impression that he or she is taking the moral high ground.
It's also significant to note how often Virtue Signaling consists of claiming hatred against something to camouflage or conceal a statement of self-righteousness. The emphasis on hate distracts from the fact that the people are actually implying how good and righteous they want you to think they are. Common themes of Virtue Signaling in this context include, but aren't limited to:
• Claiming hypocrisy of the opposition in any debate (Tu Quoque" attacks)
• Engaging in misogyny or "NT Bashing"
• Posting hate-filled rants against a decision that didn't go one member's way
• Railing against common-sense practices in dating and hiring
Virtue Signaling is not just a tool of SJWs, but is a favorite method of Internet Trolls in all their various forms.
I say it depends, because the intent of the person matters.
If the intent is they want to look good, or raise themselves up, or make themselves feel good than yes.
If they actually care but don't know what else to do then no.
