Have you ever eaten at buffet restaraunts much or worked at one :? ? I haven't, but I did eat a buffet at the hotel in Reno I stayed at for my recent trip there.
Briefly, I had to go through some hoops to get to the buffet, and I got there kind of close to closing time - so I really ended up chowing down fast first, to fell like I'd gotten my money's worth of servings on the (rather small) plates + I ate a lot 8O .
Perhaps I lived up to the stereotype of people in buffets, especially Nevada casino buffets  ! I was thinking as I eat it that a lot of the food was probably not made from the best raw naterials :| . But, I ate it :| .

It's been quite a few years since I have. It was one of those Chinese buffet restaurants.

I grew up in Vegas. Went to buffets all the time especially when out of state family and friends visited. We also went to the off-Strip Asia Buffet. These days have been to the Golden City Buffet in Monroe a few times.

I have been to a buffet at a Chinese restaurant in my town a couple of times. It was very good.

I rarely go to buffets. The main reason is probably lack of self control or a case of "my eyes being bigger than my stomach." Even if I take very small portions of things, given the number of items to choose from, it's almost assured I'll overeat and end up feeling like crap afterward. I would assume that most people overeat at buffets.

I will rarely eat at any buffet any more, especially Chinese buffets.

Years ago, we used to eat at one Chinese buffet on Sundays that was fairly popular at the time. I used to complain to the manager about people taking their plates back for a refill -- by law, they are required to get a fresh plate every time. The manager didn't seem to be at all inclined to abide by health laws.

A group of locals was eating there one day when they saw the manager take a plate of food off of the table of someone who had left and scrape what was left back on the buffet. I will never go back there again.

You can't escape the buffet by ordering from the menu. Anything in the order that can be filled from the buffet will be filled from the buffet.

Word got around and that Chinese restaurant is still in business but hardly gets any customers at all.

On another occasion, while eating in what was generally thought of the best and nicest Chinese buffet in a city of about 100,000 people, I saw a kid take a half filled plate of food back to the buffet and scrape it back onto the buffet and refill the plate with other items.

Ah, buffets bring back fond memories of the days when I would head off on a bicycle for a week or more. There was nothing I enjoyed more than than annihilating the mediocre food found on the spread at a Ponderosa Steak House. It's the only time I could consume 6,000 calories a day, and lose weight.

There's a good Indian buffet near my house.

I wish there was one near mine. In my area, Indian restaurants or any kind are pretty lackluster. Last week, I went to one in a nearby city that is reputed to be the best in that city. It was okay, but they really cut back on the spices and the result is that it doesn't really have all that much flavor.

I used to eat at one local Chinese buffet occasionally, but I quiet eating there when they started watering down the sauce used for the egg rolls. After they watered it down, it was about as thick as water.

I have a table that used to be in a Ponderosa Steakhouse before it closed down. I liked the salad bar there as a kid.

...As far as Chinese buffets go, I remember. I
in the Nineties, eating at Chinese buffets a few times that were REALKY cheap - portions a dollar each, I believe, or something like that, with maybe some exceptions. This was in run-down/cheap parts of town. Even so, this was twenty or more years ago, and inflation has probably rendered such a restaurant no longer viable.

I heard Vegas hotel buffets used to be super cheap because they only had them to keep people happy gamblers. But it's not that way anymore. When in college my dad survived on the cheap food he could get downtown on Fremont St, like $1.99 breakfasts, 10 cent White Castle type burgers, 50 cent shrimp cocktails etc.

I went to one last month that was confusing because the same food was repeated on the other side of the room. I thought I walked back to where I started and was going the wrong way.

We used to go to them a lot when I was little, but some closed down. The ones that were left were usually bad quality. They closed down eventually, too.

While not an outright buffet, one Easter years ago, I went with several other math grad students to an Easter dinner at a big hotel. They had several tables near the entrance set up with the food for you to get what you wanted and several employees to assist you with it.

The price was decent and the food was good and the time was a normal time for dining, but hardly anyone was there. In a large ballroom, there was only one table occupied in the room when we walked in and it was in the furtherest corner of the room. The first member of our group to get her food made a beeline to the next table over. I thought that with one other table, we should sit somewhere else and give them some space and privacy.

In the hour or so that we were there, nobody came in after us.

As it turned out, the other table was our local highly respected congressman and his family including grandkids and maybe even great grandkids.
