Are there interstates in Hawaii and Alaska?

Where are you going to drive to?

When I was a kid and was watching an episode of the original "Hawaii 5-0" show I heard the police detective characters reporting to each other on their walkie-talkies and one of them was describing the getaway car of the perps, and mentioned that it had "in state license plates". At that moment I turned to mom and said "Hawaii must be a place where you see VERY FEW out of state license plates". She laughed.

I just now wikied the subject.

Both Alaska and Puerto Rico have "interstate highways" but they … aren't "interstate". Even the Alaska system doesn't seem to connect to other states even indirectly via Canada (there was a famous highway built during WWII that connects the lower 48 to Alaska through Canada, but that Highway doesn't seem to have anything to do with Alaska's 1981 "interstate highway system" commissioned in 1981).

Hawaii doesn't even have noninterstate interstates. The Alaskan and PR interstates are also not built to "interstate standards". They are just two lane country highways in both places.

Hawaii has interstate highways.

Interstates H1, H2, H3 and H-201 (H-201 is an auxiliary route of H-1).

All of them are on Oahu.

As for Alaska and PR, there are interstates, but they’re not signed as such.

There are interstates on the mainland that are entirely within one state. I-87 is the longest “intrastate”, entirely within the state of New York.

A ton of federal money was spent to make the H3 Interstate. A long elevated bridge.
