on my doorstep. A lot of my neighbors were mean to my son beginning with watching him board a van. Now he is in college and they are eating themselves alive. I never bragged. I guess they're pissed because he's trying to make a life for himself and they want things to go back to the way they were. I don't want to believe they put that dead rabbit on my step but I'm suspicious. There are rabbits around here and big pet cats too along with big dogs plus people who poison animals. Any thoughts?? I have NEVER come across a dead rabbit other than one that caught its head in a fence and died there.

Some people are just plain sick! Those kinds of people who would harm or kill an animal would do it to people, too!

If there was a dead rabbit on your doorstep, right on your doorstep, then I would think it was an intentional act. Rabbits when they are threatened normally try and hide in a corner.

This would lead to a number of follow-on questions.
Was the rabbit a pet rabbit or a wild rabbit?
Do you own a dog or other animal capable of killing a rabbit?
Were there bite marks on the rabbit?
Can you determine how the rabbit was killed? Does it show signs of sickness?

Sometimes a dog will catch and kill a wild animal and bring it home as a trophy and leave it laying around.

A neighbor might have a pet rabbit which they found dead and might think that you or your animals might be responsible and leave it on your doorstep as a way of accusing you of the misdeed.

Someone may have found a dead rabbit and for some reason my have thought the animal was your pet and returned it to you.

It might be a threat. Someone may be saying that you are a scared little rabbit and if you don't listen to them, this is how you will end up.

Or it could be some kids playing a prank. We are getting close to Halloween.

Did your husband recently have an affair with Glenn Close?

Just kidding.

That's strange. Could be a coincidence.

Are there dtray cats living there? If a stray cat catches a rabbit, they may take it to the door of humans in the hope to exchange it for some cat food. It is also to show people how clever it was catching a rabbit.

I remember opening my curtains one morning and finding an angry mob outside my house. It turned out that there was a dead cat on my doorstep and because they obviously thought I was a bit weird they assumed I had poisoned it. I didn't go out, but my neighbour tried to get them to leave. Eventually the owner of the cat showed up... he said that he had put out some poison for the rats but seen his cat eating a dead rat. He stuck the cat in a bag and went.

Did I get any apologies? What do you think?

My take on your dead rabbit... there are an awful lot of innocent explanations... try not to worry about it.

Cats might present gifts to their owners (because they've never seen you kill, so clearly you need fed), but I don't think they've advanced to the point of trying to barter dead animals with strangers for cat food. A stray cat doesn't need to trade a dead rabbit for cat food, recently killed rabbits that met their demise via feline predation are cat food. :nerdy:

More likely to have been left by a dog or a cat, although I would not entirely rule out malicious human intent.

Could have killed itself. Lots of explanations. (I don't mean with a gun. I mean that it could have been running and seen another rabbit, got distracted and BAM. Dead. Run into the step).

one of our cats brought a dead squirrel (almost the size of the cat itself) to our door step, and and beamed with pride as it showed it off to us. The squirrel had no tooth nor claw marks on it. No sign the cat had actually killed it. We concluded that our cat just found a dead squirrel (that fell out of tree and died of a concussion) and just brought it home to show it off with pride, or something.

A dead rabbit on your doorstep doesn't "mean" any specific thing in society that I know of. Its not like a horse's head in your bed meaning a specific thing to mobsters. So I doubt that it someone sending you any kind of deliberate message.

Lemmings only kill themselves when Disney camera crews harass and distress them because it makes for interesting footage.

I didn't say cats never kill squirrels. Just that in this particular case our assumption of squirrel homicide may have been wrong.

Another cat we had specialized in killing and eating squirrels. The landing to the basement door was strewn with tails of dispatched squirrels that he would bring and eat at night (looking like furry question marks on the concrete). One time he vomited an entire squirrel onto the kitchen floor. Vomited it in perfect anatomical order- head to tail.
