If a skirt have to be handwash, can you put it in the washing machine on cold? Is it really a bad idea to wash new clothes with old clothes? I have a new purple heather sweatshirt & a new pajama bottoms, dark pink hearts, black & white.

Does your machine have hand wash option? If so, use that. You can also wash new clothes with old ones if you're convinced that they won't leak color.

Some machines have "hand wash" option.
Be careful with natural wool, it can shrink even with machine wash cold.
I always wash new clothes with old but I segregate them by colors.
