What is the average life expectancy of socks?

Because I've had these set for 2 1/2 years and most of them having big gaping holes in the heel, small holes in the back ankle, etc.

I suppose it depends on how well they actually fit. I but socks that are a couple of sizes too small and just rely on them stretching, because I can never find socks that are actually big enough. Or at least, not easily. Mine only tend to last a few months, as a result.

They usually last about four years for me. Give or take.

My pairs of socks always get divorced from each other or one of the pair get lost or leaves its mate, if they would just stay together I could have pairs of socks that last for years. Now I have a few pair and a drawer full of singles waiting for their mates to return.

I agree with CC, you are so lucky to have a pair of socks that stuck together after 2 to 2 1/2 years! But then we always must learn to be graceful when we put them away for the last time.

I sometimes will go through my drawers and cull my underwear. ( I don't mean to offend, they are fresh from the laundry) those ones with little runs, those that the elastic has been streched past comfort and to non existance, I used to have a little viking funeral for these old friends. . but now I just put them in their own little bag and launch them out into the vast solid waste fields of America. . ..

But I think of those gentle washed fabrics that stopped my chaffing, that absorbed my bodily effluvia and wish them well in what ever incarnations they may have in the future.

i only have three types of socks. that way i don't have to worry about losing mates, or even sorting them out. when i get low on socks i buy more of the same type and mix them in, and within a couple washes i can't tell them apart. i am phasing out the white ones because most of my wardrobe is in dark colors. i also only have one type of underwear.

and i use a similar method with my saxophone and clarinet reeds. it saves me from getting hung up on how many good or bad ones i have at a given time, and how long they are lasting.

in both cases, it saves me from forming an emotional attachment to things that are more or less disposable.

i have considered replacing my entire wardrobe with black t-shirts and army pants but decided that would be a little too weird.

well, i do try to stay on the "normal" side of the freak scale... and am frequently successful.

i dunno, is boise a weirder town than other places of a similar size?

I've never cared too much for socks. Once holes start to develop, they drive me nuts! Lucky for me, most of my shoes don't require me to wear socks!

For me they don't last long, I don't clip my toenails often enough they wear holes in the socks quickly. Usually a few months.

My socks escape from the washing machine into a parallel dimension on which sock life-forms are free to roam forever. As a result, I don't know how long socks will live in the wild. In captivity, socks generally last a year before becoming holey. I will continue to wear them until they start the final phase of disintegration. I do the same with all my clothes - I'm actually about due to go clothes shopping, as I've not actually bought any for a good four or five years now (other than socks).

when i lived in the dorms, i sometimes found other people's socks in my laundry. once, i found a thong. i tacked it on one of the bulletin boards, but sadly no one claimed it.

Mine usually end up that way, too. so i try and buy a whole BUNCH of socks that all look the same. Then if a few get lost it won't matter since any other in the pile will match the lost one(s). I have a couple of favorite pairs that I've had a few years, maybe 4 or 5 years.
