...and how do you usually cope with it?

My sister didn't arrive until I was nearly seven years old, so I did spend some while as the only child in the family.

I'm not sure I ever did 'cope' with it in that sense, largely because I didn't feel it was a problem.

It could, however, have had some impact on aspects of my personality if one was going to be picky. With no sibling for some time and both parents working I grew perfectly happy in my own company and became an extremely independant child and, latterly, adult.

How much of that is to do with being an only child and how much is simply a result of AS is perhaps debatable, I certainly don't know the answer. But I think my sense of independance has made my life a touch easier than perhaps it would have been otherwise.

I was. Actually I don't know how I would have coped if I wasn't...I probably would have been trying to box my little brother or sister up constantly and mail them to China or something.

I couldn't tolerate other kids my age even for extended periods of time.

I was an only child and I am very glad. I had enough quiet time to myself to wind down when I needed to.

I was an only child until I was either 13 or 12 years old. I loved it. I love my sister dearly but I find my self wanting her gone many times a day. My mom is pregnant again and I am dreading the day. I know. I'm horrible.

I'm my single mother's only child. Even though I have few half-brothers and half-sisters I don't know them - their age, names (with one exception) and even exact number of my siblings remains a secret for me. I know about two or three older brothers and two younger sisters but I have never had an occasion to meet them as same as my father who abandoned us when mom was pregnant.

I must admit I always loved being without siblings, it gave me a chance to develop my interests (when you're still alone you have a lot of time for this). I had a room only for myself, I didn't have to share things given to me by mother and other members of family with other kids. I was my grandparents's favourite granddaughter until they died - I was the youngest of their 4 grandchildren (two of them were much older than me, 18 and 16 years older).

But it has its disadvantages - my mother is obsesively overprotective, concentrated only on me, I'd even say I'm the only joy of her boring life. I don't do MANY things normal for other young people (I'm 23) because of it. If I had siblings I'd be also forced to learn being more sociable.

I was an only child. It never struck me one way or the other at the time of childhood.

Looking back at the difficult times I had, however, I used to blame them on not having learned to socialize with siblings.

Then I had kids. I was careful to have a second, once I had a first. They both have autism.

In learning about their autism, I learned about AS and realized that I was reading my own life story.

I'm an only child. I sort of wish now that I had interesting siblings... but sort of not. I don't care anymore, I can't control it. I just plan to have a lot of kids; I'll get artificially inseminated if I never find a guy and time starts to run out. :)

Yeah, I'm getting off topic. I'm wierd.

Sometimes I wish I were an only child. My siblings drive me crazy (well, at least two out of three of them do). :?
