For me, just anything stimulating. Light, sound, heat, movement, bestselling books, Harry Potter... sometimes thinking about outdoor kitchen designs and chocolates and perfume and those things that have little to do with death... other times reading about afterlife and visitations by dead people... sometimes even looking at pictures of beautiful corpses on autopsy slabs, their dignity preserved even in death... I also feel this rare, rare compassion for other depressives, which is ironic, since depressed people are supposed to cause the world's problems. But they're the nicest, most empathetic, most decent, happy, friendly, full-of-life people I have ever met. I was also prescribed citalopram, which works off and on. It's supposed to start working after 4 weeks, and this is about 4 weeks after I started taking it, but now I want to sleep a lot more, and then I wake up depressed because for several hours I wasn't looking for stimulation, so didn't find any.

But I could still do with some help! Please vote! I voted for adventure, nearly dying, etc. but maybe I should have voted for combo of 1 or more of the above.

EDIT: Darn, how many poll options ARE allowed?

Facing your greatest fears-- going to an abandoned morgue, going in the subway, walking thru a ghetto, etc)?
Watching the news and reminding yourself you could be worse off?
Talking to other depressives about how depressed you've all been?
Watching your idol (on TV, in plays/movies, in magazines, in person, etc)?
Showing off (giving a seminar, a presentation, putting on a show, whatever)?
Teamwork, feeling useful?
Going to an art museum, a garden or something creative and colorful?
Just being close to loved ones?
Just being in a bright room full of chattering people?
Adventure, nearly dying, stuff like that?
Prescribed antidepressant drugs?
Over-the-counter antiepressant drugs
Street drugs (ioncluding pot)?
Jokes?
Music?
Exercise?
Sleep?
Alcoholic beverages?
Tobacco?
Food?
Talk?
Sex (including masturbation)?

If you include thymoanesthesia as close enough to an antidepressant action. Then I I say prescription SSRI's is my top pick.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antidepres ... anesthesia

Quote:
Thymoanesthesia

Closely related to sexual side effects is the phenomenon of emotional blunting, or mood anesthesia. Many users of SSRIs complain of apathy, lack of motivation, emotional numbness, feelings of detachment, and indifference to surroundings. They may describe this as a feeling of "not caring about anything any more." All SSRIs, SNRIs, and serotonergic TCAs are liable to cause this effect to varying degrees, especially at higher dosages.

I sometimes feel apathy, then I decide it's just my imagination, especially since I felt that way often before I started taking the SSRI (or anything, for that matter). But I only noticed that around now, 4 weeks after I started taking citalopram, so maybe it is that. I really hope it isn't the case. Often when I hear of apathy I wonder if the drugs really help people at all.

Sadly the term anti-depressant does not mean make you happy it merely means to stop you from being sad. No question I choose emotional blunting over the constants negative thinking and thoughts of suicide.

I totally agree. Then I need something else to make me happy. Often, though, when you take an antidepressant and it makes you feel less sad, but still sad, that means you may need a better one or a higher dose or something, no? Otherwise, a life. Right away. Especially if you're still so depressed you are almost dead, which DOES happen. Those people often run outside and shout, "Look at me, look at me!" or go on a shooting spree, a shopping spree, a stabbing spree, a vandalism spree, drinking binge, sex (aka raping) spree, whatever, anmd the worst thing to do is put the person in solitary and/or give them antipsychotics that have the side effect of depression, but this happens all too often. :( :)

I prefer drinking and drugs, but that usually just makes things worse. Humor is usually good therapy. I also like graffiti and just being creative. Reading about (or obsessing) about a topic of interest usually distracts me from depression. I just try to be positive and avoid the past, which is extremely difficult.

Exercise does it for me...
It's also satisfying that not only do I find it an anti-depressant, I also get pleasure in the fact that it's helping my body too. :)

definitely the exercise. Its murder trying to get on that treadmill, but man, it really helps. I usually feel more balanced after a nice long walk. The cats are a nice addition. That, and i love to go to places where i can sit on a bench and watch people go by. Its almost a study in anthropology and human behavior. I also like to shop to find certain colors in clothing... my favorite is patterns using red and a nice rich shade of blue. Those colors seem to heat and cool each other so well, and I feel really excited and stimulated when i see that combination. Hence the avatar.

I'm not one for 'self history' and not one for history as such when I think of my football team for example... in these respects I don't rate history highly... especially 'self history'. I know this doesn't really bare any importance to the forum lol just thought I'd say is all. :)

I find that cycling or some other rhythmic exercise usually keeps me out of a rut, as does soothing music.

Dawndelon, I also like shopping for clothes of my favorite colors! For me, it's a nice stormy blue like yours, and a muddy brown to go with it. It reminds me of storms (I find disasters very stimulating) and the natural brown of many primitive places... ground, mud or wood huts, etc.

I also find that exercise helps me. It's hard to start, as Dawndelon says, but once I'm into it or done it, I feel way better, physically and mentally (though it's torture physically sometimes; I'm really out of shape.)
