Hoarding + excessive collecting

Does anyone else here have a tendency to buy a lot of the thing that interests them and in a sense, hoard it ?
It is a nightmare.
Right now, I seem to have an obsession with clothing...specifically tops to go over leggings...and gemstones plus sudoku.
Even though I have books of crosswords and sudoku that are not yet done, every time I see another one, I want to buy it lol.

My mother is extreme enough that she should be getting counseling for it. I guess like all things it can occur in a spectrum of various degrees with people. I have lots of near worthless junk. I scavenge the garbage of the modern industry world mainly now as I have learned not to spend money when I do not have a job. My DVD drive in my computer came straight out of the garbage of a computer store(my favorite garbage ).

Even to the extent of newspaper cuttings and pictures the size of stamps.

i do it with Cds and Sportscards. im going to be getting 4 or 5 alex rodrigeuz rookies at the end of the month and 2 or 3 of ken griffeys rookie cards. im also a sucker for "game used" cards bats, uniforms etc. etc. etc.

For the first three or four years of college I picked up the University newspaper every day. I organized them into plastic tubs for each semester. Eventually they took up enough space that I had to get rid of them. Also, if I buy a book in a series, I usually try to buy all the other books in that series. Some of them had dozens of books. I am now buying linux games. I have over 20 games.

Yes, and unfortunately the things I tend to collect are not all that cheap.

Obsessions can be terribly expensive.

When I was "poorer" it was stuff from the dumpster.Now that I earn,enough,it''s thriftstores.The problem isnt just that my "interests" catch my eye and compel me to have it.It's that every yar I get older I have more interests but the old interests never completly die out.....so I have tons of magine pictures from when I was collaging,beads from beading,cloth from sewing,toys from making toy sculptures,clay and fema,fur coats for making a fur blanket..."someday".I wear about the same three outfits most days but cant get rid of my old cloths that I like the texture(silk or fuzzy or velvet)or patterns or color because..."someday"I will use them to make something.

Then I have thousands of books and movies that I have watched and "might" want to watch again or are just so good I cant part with them(like friends,only more reliable ).The I have my collections of cats,antiques(which I am positive are worth millions and I will sell on line someday,lol.)Problem......I live in a one bed room apartment with a BF who collects old stereos,guitars,amps,records....two bunnies whose house takes up 1/3 of the living room,two cats and his son on the weekends(who keeps every videogame system ever made and video games for them,here.

We have no room to walk and there is no place to store anything,it's frustrating as heck and hard to find the stuff when we do need it.I need one of those "makeover" people to come in and orginise(but not throw anything out).

I cut out things from the newspaper all of the time. Mainly the weather sections.

I collect lots of things mostly from junk piles,estate sales and tag sales. Mostly it's old tools or tube type electronics and some military stuff. I am better now than I used to be as I began selling some at a local flea market it provides me with more funds to buy more. My shed and basement are full still though with path ways through the stuff.

well - now I'm homeless and I seem to have lost EVERYTHING I once had

I know how tough that is,it's been 17 years since I was homeless and I still think about some of my favorite things that I lost.It really sucks.I did save a suitcase full of poems,letters and music tapes that I stored at an old BF,but all my other stuff ended up in the garbage.I'm sorry that you lost your stuff hankypym.

The thought of the forced loss of all my junk is kind of liberating. I have felt that way in the past when harddrives failed. And I learned how little I really need my data.

i mean i collect things i like but i think i pretty much know where to draw the line. some people are so bad at it that in there house theres only a pathway to the kitchen, bathroom, living room and bedrooms so they can walk. with stuff piled up to the ceilings. yikes! i think its the same disorder as people haveing thousands of cats in there house

hi man, not so long ago I saw a page that someone made, it showed pics of her mom's house, it was... well... shocking falls short

The pathway problem is how my house is.
It isn't a big house to start with, but both of my parents are collector/hoarders. So am I, but I have been working on curbing it.

My mom has a gigantic collection of sewing equipment. She has like 3 or 4 sewing machines, a couple of sergers (sp?) and mountains of fabric. She has so much fabric that it fills dozens of the large rubbermaid plastic tubs. It is so ridiculous as our whole garage is filled with wicker baskets and tubs of fabric. I am always wondering how much of that fabric is rotting and molding in those things. She then had a kick of rubber stamping and other arts and craft things that fill up about a quarter of our basement. With the sewing taking up a quarter and the garage. Every now and then we get a fabric land slide that I excavate to get out of my room. You can't even get into my mom's sewing area anymore without climbing gear or a shovel. That wasn't really a joke.

My dad is a computer junkie. The other half of the basement is racks with old computer parts and cables. Old computer magazines. The 3 or 4 servers we have running things. Some of that is for work, but still. My dad also has a computer in the living room. He has been working on getting rid of stuff, ebay is great for that. Unfortunately he also got into harmonicas. He has about a dozen of them now, but at least they are small. My dad tends to get really into a new hobby every other year or so: ultra-light gliders, model rockets, radio controlled planes, almost got into building a wooden canoe but didn't have the room for it.

I have half of each of the two rooms I share with my brother filled with miniatures for my wargames, books for my role playing games, collectible card games, and my anime and movie dvds. I found Netflix to be great at lowering my buying impulse to watch movies and anime. I never liked normal video rental, but the fixed price per month works great. It has saved me a ton of money because I am not buying all the series to watch them. My miniature collecting I managed to put a stop to just from sheer will power and a tightening of spare money. I think I have it beat as several sets have come out since I stopped and I don't have any desire to get them.
