Its a variant on old joke.

One of the one frame cartoons by Gary Larson (the Far Side) showed...a paunchy middle aged explorer type wearing a round pith helmut, and a bush jacket. In his right arm is a cheap looking blonde floozy, and resting in his left hand is and ugly looking skull.

The caption reads "The dream of every anthropologist. A beautiful woman in one hand, and a skull of a pithecanthropus in the other."
