Christmas movie or not

It has officially been announced that it is not a Christmas movie but I'm quite happy to say it is

What do you reckon

It takes place at Christmas time but it does not have any Christmas elements. It's a good movie & so are the sequals but the sequals do not take place at Christmas time so I do not consider it a Christmas movie.

I don't think I ever watched it - btw, in Poland it is known as literally "Glass Trap" :) Btw, in my country the traditional Christmas movie is "Home Alone" (here known as "Kevin Home Alone") - it is aired on TV EVERY year and most people know it by heart

This comes up every year. :D
The great debate.

The story takes place at Christmas. There are Christmas things in it, a Christmas party, a Christmas tree. there is Christmas cheer with "Yippee-ki-yay" replacing placing "Oh, oh, oh" I don't know. John McClane works his way through the duct work, a modern retelling of Santa coming down the chimney. Actually, there is a note that reads, "Now I have a machine gun. Ho ho ho." See? It might as well say, "Good will to all people."

When Hans Gruber "bows out" at the end of the film, they have the ghost of Christmas past, and present. I think Christmas future would have been redundant. It's only seconds away. They are there though, but in reverse of what we normally see. Well, we don't see them, but that's because they are ghosts. When Hans is falling, I know he sees his Christmas present the first few milliseconds as his present takes a downward turn in. Then his life is flashing before his eyes. The footage was all probably lost on the cutting room floor. It's all very Charles Dickens.
And in the end, evil loses, goodness wins, and John McClane is reunited with his failing family. It's a new modern realist Christmas movie.

Those are a few musings. I think the ghost of Christmas past would have been more apparent if when Hans meets his end, it was in slow motion and the sound track "The Way We Were."

People seem to think Gremlins is a Christmas movie, but I remember when it first came out in the *summer*.

Although it is winter in the southern hemisphere when it's summer up here.

Gremlins was ahead of the curve. The Christmas season starts earlier and earlier.
Gremlins was released June 8 1984.
Die Hard was released July 1988.
Elf was released November 2003.
I can see the trend. I can also see where this is going. In the spoiler you go. Don't ruin Christmas for everyone...

Christmas movies use to be released way before Christmas.
I would not be surprised if Christmas films were released in January to start a new cycle. What if a movie is not just a month early, but actually two years and five months early or late?

"Think of the profits that can be made if we release this Christmas film six years and two months before the targetted season?"

Does it matter if we celebrate the birth of Christ in December and it is believed he was actually born in the spring, we celebrate Christmas three seasons late or one season early because way back then someone noticed how the pagan celebrations were really boosting the profits at the local market bins. The pagan fashion trends were always in full swing in December, and those in charge wanted the fashion trends to reflect what they wore, business suites and gold sun dials.

According to the principle on Family Guy, the movie was originally released in summer but it took place on Christmas Eve which makes it a Christmas film & Peter threw out the rule book

It’s suppose to be a generational thing, Gen-X says it’s a Christmas movie.
I have no opinion either way. I don’t like most traditional Christmas movies like It’s a Wonderful World.
The only Christmas movie I like is Christmas Vacation.

My opinion is that it is a Christmas movie. it takes place at Christmas and there's a Christmas song on the soundtrack.

It is an action movie that just happens to take place during Christmas time. Christmas itself doesn't play an important part of the plot.
