I've heard that other people on here like libraries, and I just want to say that I do too!

Today I went to the Senate House Library in London. I wasn't looking forward to spending my weekend in a library, doing research for school, but when I got there, I loved it! That library is supermassive, and it's like entering some parallel universe or something, LOL. It's awesome. Has anyone else been there?

Anyway, I also love the University of California at Santa Cruz library, because you can sit by the windows and look out at all these plants in the little center plaza while you study...

I am such a nerd, haha.

I like large libraries with higher-than-first-grade-level books, unfortunately my small town doesn't have that - only little kid books and novels. I like non-fiction books about science and languages and history, but Jordan doesn't have that. I remember going to the libraries back in Texas and reading about various types of lasers or the American revolution or etymology. But Scott county doesn't have an adult section worth speaking of. Barnes and Noble is almost like that too, but when I'm out I do spend considerable time there. I prefer college libraries, such as the one at Bethel University, over public libraries.

That is to say that some libraries I could spend the whole day reading at, but not all of them.

Now I don't go to libraries so often as I used to do it before because when I want to read some book I simply look for it in its electronic version. But I love an atmosphere of libraries, I always did. I used to borrow the same books many times.

Libraries are just like Hardware Stores to me... I can go in there and wander for DAYS, just looking at everything on the shelf wondering what I could do with it :compress: :D

I may have one particular subject, or author, etc. that I am going to the library to get a book on...
BUT I COME OUT WITH AN ARMLOAD.. of books and videos!... well, most of the time anyway.
And what I check out may have nothing to do with what I originally went in for.

I also like to walk over to the Periodicals section and see which magazines people have taken down and left on the tables.
I don't go and read them, I'm just curious what other people are looking at.

Same thing with the books people leave off the shelves. I like to see what kind of books people are pulling down, then I imagine what they must have been looking for in them.

Around two years ago, I chaperoned my daughter out to D.C. to attend a Young Leader's Conference thing she signed up for.
After it was all over, she and I spent a couple of days looking around.
Of course... we HAD to go to the Library of Congress!
I took her photo outside with a copy of MUSE magazine (her favorite), then we went inside.
I registered and received my library card so we could go 'deep inside' and peruse the materials.

My daughter is as big a bibliophile as I am, so we were both ECSTATIC over being in one of the most FAMOUS Libraries in the world! :D :D :D

We even pulled down some books and read them at the tables.
That was one of the highlights of our trip!

Haha, this reminds me of a recent trip to Oxford I took, when I was lucky enough to go with friends who love books too, and so we spent hours in Blackwell bookshop instead of exploring the sites. LOL. It was great.

I also tend to go in for one thing and come out with a load of books on unrelated subjects... :) And like Irulan, I check out the same books over and over. It's a comfort thing for me. If I read a book and like it, I want to keep the same copy of it around my place. I get used to the way it's worn down, etc.

i hate libraries.... well its not so much hate, its more that i get very overloaded in them very quickly, to the point of passing out  i dont know exactly why.... i do find the places to be an unusual sensory hell - they are quiet, but not perfectly silent.... every so often someone moves or coughs or taps on their desk, its random quiet noise and it drives me absolutely crazy, a bit like light touch does. also the books make me anxious, the way they all look jumbled randomly on the shelves... they should of course all be arranged in order of colour and height

fortunately i discovered that i'm not the only person that has extreme difficulty using the library, to the point that the university library actually has a specialist support librarian for people who suffer from anxiety in the library  so with a team of me, my AS support worker and the support librarian i did manage to get some books out last time i went, although i still got a severely pounding heart and the usual panic and stress :?

i just thought i'd write this cos everything i read about AS seems to say that everyone with AS loves libraries like they're our home planet or something (i think its even in the AQ test) but it isnt true, a lot of us have severe difficulty to the point of inaccessibility (the support librarian said that most of the AS students have trouble with the library). but they do seem to be recognising this now and making help available, well at my library at least :D

I love libraries, just prefer it if there weren't any other people, especially little brats who can't be controlled.

Headphones and an iPod/Mp3 Player!
Works well for me.
Can't help you with the 'untidy books' thing though.

Yeah, no kidding. One boss I worked for used to, and still does, bring her 3 year old brat to work and let him wander the whole store just doing whatever! Those type of parents don't deserve to have children.

There are now a lot of digital libraries. Here is a directory of some of them. The National Science Digital Library covers most areas of science. The Internet Public Library is the web equivalent of a public library.

I am studying digital libraries because I am working on a masters degree in library and information science. This is the minimum requirement to be a librarian. I used to work in a public library and I got annoyed by the screaming kids (and adults) too. Fortunately, there are plenty of jobs in digital libraries, academic libraries (at colleges and universities), and special libraries (run by private organizations such as law firms, hospitals, and museums).

I chose to go into the field because there are plenty of job openings and it will allow me to make use of my knowledge. However, I will probably change directions and enter a PhD program after I graduate from this one.

I love the library. I can spend hours there alone, wandering the aisles and browsing.

I love books in general. Libraries are nice because you get books for almost free, but the bad part is giving them back, I like to hold onto my books. *sigh* And I'm getting back into the swing of fictional novels. I just finished reading "Catcher in the Rye"! Good book...
