Ok, everytime I watch the weather, Stornoway is 3 or 4 Celsius hotter than London. Why is this? I thought that Stornoway was popular for being cold, wet and windy? Now they have better weather than us in the bustling city of London?

Stornoway sits right off the North Atlantic Current, its this that keeps Northern Europe warm at the same latitudes that theres Polar Bears running arround in Canada.
London could be cooler from the breezes from the North Sea blowing South, or the fogs, mists and smogs low lying citys get near the sea.

I live in Stornoway and have done for the past five years. I am a keen weather-watcher. I can confirm that the post about the warming effect of the current is correct.

Typically we are warmer than the rest of the UK at around this time of year when the South East of England is susceptible to continental weather influences. This year has been exceptionally warm. However, as you correctly observe, we are also famous for wind and rain, which continues unabated despite the warm temperatures. The net effect of wind chill and rain ensures that it remains fairly unpleasant to walk outside at this time of year.

At this time of year we also have exceptionally short days, due to our latitude. It currently does not get light until around 9am, and dusk begins to fall at about 2.30pm.

Thank you for the post. Very helpful. Besides the weather, what is life like in Stornoway? Its a very small island indeed.
