Does a place like this exist?

I am wondering if there is a place in the U.S. that is...

a) relatively immune to natural disasters,

b) is politically and socially liberal

c) does not have a high cost of living

This place can be a big city or a small town, and is preferably in the southern or western U.S.

Not in the US - but Australia is mostly like that.

Mutually exclusive are politically and socially liberal and with a low cost of living. All that liberalism comes at the cost of taxation.

Does this mean that all the cheap places to live are conservative?

I think that the cost of living in Alabama and Mississippi are lower than the rest of the US and they have far right politics.

Move to Australia. We have kangaroos.

And his wife is from Oregon! See, you and I have a connection, of a sort!

They also have their share of hurricanes, too (although the MS and AL coasts are very beautiful). I don't know about Alabama, but Mississippi's economy isn't really that great.

I've heard Idaho and Montana are rather conservative as well.

As for the place Tim_Tex is describing, it's definitely not in Indiana. However, Georgia may fit the description pretty well.

Which part of Georgia?

I'd have to say Atlanta. For one, a house that would around $700,000 here would only cost about $250,000 there. It's also in the south and I know they don't get many storms. I'm not sure where they stand on politics though.

I've heard Tennessee is very nice, too. While they're not exactly a blue state, they are less conservative than most of the south.

I have a friend that's from Tennessee. But she's been living here for years now. But as far as I know, she really liked it there.

Austin, Texas is actually really cool. The rent can be a little high, though, especially if you're near UT. Austin is the epicenter of weird. A handflapping, crazed autistic skipping down the street in a clown suit and no pants would only be, like, the 237th weirdest thing in Austin.

For instance, a few years ago I ran into a guy named Rabbit, who happened to be the only member of the Manson Family (yes, the REAL Manson Family) not currently in prison (he still wore the same outfit from back in the day). We chatted for a while on the street (nice guy) and got to hear fun stories about Charlie and Sharon Tate and whatnot. Everybody knew who he was, and nobody really cared all that much. He just wasn't weird enough. It was a normal day in Austin.

Oh yeah, fark the rest of Texas.

Let's see, Champaign/Urbana, Illinois isn't too bad. Still kinda north, but far enough south that snow usually doesn't stick around too long. Oh, and the university bookstore is awesome.

Other that that, it's hard to think of anything that isn't expensive. The Pacific Northwest probably has some options, though I haven't traveled enough out there lately to know what places might be reasonably cheap.
