For some reason, this questions been on my mind all day. "What do say to an atheist when he or she sneezes?" (I mean, it just doesn't seem appropriate to "bless" them.)

most will say it anyway

its common enough that people wont take it as anything but manners

though i guess you could specify if you want
Satan bless you
'your nonexistent god' bless you
'your misguided need for order in an unordered world' bless you :D

I believe it's German for god bless you.

It's the German equivalent of what English speaking people say when someone else sneezes.

Same goes for saying it to someone around you that sneezed. Just cross your fingers hoping you don't catch their germs and say nothing.

Say the same thing you'd say if they hadn't sneezed.

"Nice weather, isn't it"
"Cool sandals"
"Wanna see my scar?"
etc

Imagine if you were supposed to say something when someone else farts. Not any different than when they sneeze. Bodily functions don't need recognition.

That would still be awkward, since athiests give no more value to the word "Satan" than they do to "God".

Well, I'm not exactly atheist. I'm more irreligious. I usually say things like:

Fill in the blank bless you!

Pick your poison bless you!

Somebody bless you!

And, of course:

Hey! Stop sneezing on me!

I don't know. I'm Buddhist, so this always makes me really uncomfortable. Mostly I say nothing.

I usually flinch and cover my ears; sneezes are painful.

Seriously though, why would you feel the need to say anything? Saying "Bless you" is just a throwback to the Dark Ages when people thought demons caused disease. When people said "Bless you" they were literally blessing you in order to drive the demons out. I think we know better now. It's just an outdated and ridiculous tradition.
