do you suppose that if one were to brush their teeth and leave the teethpaste in their mouth for a while, it would work better that brushing, spitting and rinsing?

I got the idea from having to leave special shampoos in one's hair and on their scalp for maximum results. I thought that if you let your teeth soak in the foam created by brushing, there would be a better chance for the active ingredients in the teethpaste to do its job and seep into areas where the brush can't get into or maybe dissolve tartar and plaque better.

Note I have used the term "teethpaste" in this post because people don't just brush one tooth at a time and "tooth" is not the plural tense of itself like "deer" or "moose".

If the "teethpaste" had some sort of bleaching agent, etc...it might work, but regular teethpaste is just an abrasive gel. You have to brush, in order for it to work.

If it contains flouride, I would think that the longer it is in your mouth, the more effective it would be.

flouride is actually a poison, so to much of it would not be good for you.

If you want kick arse clean teeth then floss as well.

I am about to get a 'deep cleaning' at the dentist because of tarter build-up. It seems the dentist says my main problem is that I don't floss. So, I would say flossing would be more effective at fighting plaque and tarter than what you have suggested.

My dentist recommended leaving some toothpaste on your teeth, a 'spit out' rather than a rinse out method. Apparently he thinks I need the fluoride.

Not too much, man! Shampoo will destroy your hair and flouride will give you cancer.

After I'm done brushing, flossing, and brushing again, I use Act flouride mouth rinse. The bottle says not to drink anything for at least 30 minutes after spitting out the Act. From that, I extrapolate that even rinsing with water would be a detriment. So don't do it.

Interesting idea Digger1.

Question-be there any way to avoid flossing without consequences? I'm not big on flossing, actually have flossed maybe a total of 3 times in 22 years, lol. I know this has got to be GREAT for my teeth. Any way I might be able to avoid the flossing without screwing up my teeth?

It took me about three years to make a habit of flossing. You have to force yourself at first.

I found I had to keep several rolls of floss in convenient and comfortable spots around the house. If I had to go the bathroom and just stand there and do it I probably wouldn't.

use listerine instead,it's the best mouth wash am have ever used,
is not for everyone though as listerine is very strong.
am developed severe fluorosis from tooth paste binge eating since toddlerhood,so am not sure if that would also affect self if were to keep tooth paste in mouth for a while long term.

I am not really one to comment on dental health because even though my pa is a dentist I have not actually seen a dental professional for more than 10 years!

I just hate having someone poking around inside my mouth in the same way I hate hairdressers fiddling around with me (unless she is exceptionally hot obviously). I tend to forget to brush my teeth a lot of the time and I have pretty bad acid erosion, gum recession and tobacco/coffee staining (classy!).

The official line seems to be that leaving a small amount of fluoride toothepaste to work withing your mouth by spitting but not rinsing can be beneficial. Some of the new toothpastes have that new liquid calcium crap in them but I struggle to see how that would really help.

Baking soda toothpastes are pretty good for gentle whitening if you don't want that dirty Beverly Hills Formula stuff. My favorite is the old skool red Euthymol which tastes of clove oil, thymol and cinnamon like that Dentyne chewing gum Mmmmmm!

flossing serves two purposes:

Gets stuff out from in between teeth - built up plaque, bits of food and stuff and it helps strengthen gums and make them healthy and tight. The heather they are, the less likely will bits of food and crap get under the gumline possibly causing pain, swelling and an infection.
