As is now in my custom rank, VX est V sed XV non est V.

VX, 10 - 5, is V, 5, but XV, 10 + 5, is not V, five.

Can anyone come up with similar statements?

Your list of Roman numerals varies slightly from what I learned in school.

N=0? I was taught that the Romans never figured out the concept of zero and didn't have a symbol for it.

For five thousand, ten thousand, etc., I learned that the line went above the letter, not after it.

Like this:

_
X = 10,000

Nullus, nulla, nullum are usually adjectives, but according to wikipedia N was used to represent zero in the Eighth century AD. Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_numerals#Zero
I would think that nilum or nihilum would be better words since they are already nouns.

Also, there is a word in New Latin for zero, though it was made after the Arabs and Mayans:

Zerum, zeri Noun (2nd declension) Neuter NeoLatin.

I chose to use | rather than _ because of the space reduction formatting of the board.

They are a usefull thing to know and when trying split things apart you can use: a) b) c), 1. 2. 3. and I II III.

Oh, okay. I studied classical Latin, and I thought that's what we were doing here. If you want to throw in medieval Latin and church Latin, that's cool too. :)

I like Roman numerals. I find it strange that some people can't read them.

I never knew until this year that on Roman numeral clocks, 4 is supposed to be IIII, and not IV. Strange that I never noticed before.

Well, it's an either way issue: IIII just means 1+1+1+1 whereas IV means 5-1, so both equal four.

Roman notation topic

Very numerous, those numerals.

But IIII? Looks like a stutter. Better as IV.

I never knew x with a line on top of it was 10,000, and I never knew about the N. I was told the Romans just left a space where the 0 would be.

I will check it out. Interesting. :D

Roman numerals are neat, but for doing math problems, I can't thank the Hindus and Arabs enough for the system we use now.

I don't think the Romans would have written any number that way; they usually only subtracted one number at a time. If they had written something like that, most likely they would have calculated it thus: X - V - I = IV.

I like to impress people by reading the dates written in Roman numerals at the beginning or end of a movie.
