I have finished reading A People's History of the Civil War by David Williams and found it fascinating with a totally different slant. For example; at any one time, over 1/2 of the Confederate Army were deserters. They viewed the war as a rich man's fight and not theirs. They would desert to go home to protect their families and/or property. They felt no allegiance to the Confederacy. While the majority did not believe in racial equality they were against slavery. Dissertion was a big problem in the Northern armies as well. The facts in this book are well documented.
