Because the Devil makes them do it!

It's a matter of 'Free Association' - someone spots an unrelated detail in a post, and then feels compelled to post a comment about it. Then someone replies to that post ... and then someone else ... and pretty soon we have a case of 'Thread Incursion'.

(Case in point: Let's see how long it is before someone starts a sub-thread based entirely upon the first line of this post...)

Most informal communication between people goes that way. Especially in a group.

People's attention meanders a lot so they go off topic.

Also, there are some who out-and-out hijack a thread.

I used to do it a lot till I became more aware of it after watching other members doing it.

It's a little akward to post on a topic that turns into something else. Sometimes I find myself just posting a reply and then when I look, it's strange to see a debate or anything going on and there's my post not having to do with a discussion.

I've read that it can be common among aspies when we have our own self interests.
