Do you lead yourself in disasters, or do you follow others?

At the private Catholic girls' school I went to in grades 7 and 8, they told us that if there was a shooter they'd shut us in our classrooms with the lights off and all of us were to get up against the wall the door was in. That is not the safe thing to do in a shooting. The safer thing to do would be to let us go out the windows and run, because the shooter could shoot through the window in the door and reach in and unlock it, then come into the classroom and shoot it up. Or the shooter could go to the windows outside and shoot us from out there. I'd have liked to see any teacher stop me from leaving through the window. Adults who are responsible for kids are so stupid sometimes; they shouldn't be responsible for kids.

I've never been in a disaster, but I'd like to think that others would be following me. I don't panic in extreme situations, so I would be able to make rational decisions that could save lives. It's a good quality to have when everybody is freaking out.

Bullets don't go through cinderblock - which is the main material used in schools.

But they do go through glass-- and there were windows in the classrooms at my school. There were windows in the doors too.

The glass used is a safety glass that doesn't shatter with buckshot. There is also wire on them. This is the windows on the doors. If they are shooting from outside, then you go in the hallways and hope the police come soon enough.

If I were in that situation, I'd probably bolt for the window as well. In disasters, I'd probably either lead myself, or panic and shut-down.

Living here in Florida, I've been through a number of Hurricanes. Probably the closest to disaster I've come. Only had to evacuate once, and that was when I was 3 years old, so I don't really remember it. All the other storms caused flooding, power outages, and minor wind damage. In all cases, it was never very dangerous and certainly not disastrous. I'm quite lucky in this regard. Many people in neighboring communities have lost homes and businesses in these storms. In Florida, it's only a matter of time before a storm gets you.
