I have a 75 gallon fish tank and had fresh water fish for years and was successful with it. I want to get it cleaned up (it's been in storage) and take on the challenge of doing a saltwater tank this time. I'm going to have a coral reef as well. I've been researching it for awhile. Does anyone have any knowledge or experience with saltwater?

yep, i dive in nothing else but.

Honestly, leave fish in their naturl environment and go visit them, you won't regret it.

I have a little knowledge of saltwater tanks. I've just never been brave enough to attempt it because the fish are so rare and expensive I don't want to kill them. Also always worry about going on vacation and leaving saltwater tank care to a amateur friend is risky. Still I keep telling myself I will set up a saltwater tank someday so I continue to read about it.

I always heard small salt tanks were darn near impossible to pull off. But a guy at work set up a 5 gallon tank on his desk with small reef, clown, anemone, snails and shrimp. He only changed the water once a month, don't know how he ever pulled that off!

Make sure that you do not use table salt, UK table salt has a little ferrocyanide in it. It is too little to harm people but it might do things to fish.

Actually I don't think you're suppose to use anybody's table salt. I think US table salt has something else in it that will kill the fish. Aquarium salt has a lot more than sodium in it. Magnesium, calcium and boron also I think plus other stuff I don't remember.

Check on the rule here. I think it is something like 1 inch of fish for every 10 gallons. But the coral reef might allow more fish because the natural filtering system is better. You may want to verify this to make sure. The store where you buy your fish should be able to tell you for sure. You have to watch for compatible fish too. Good luck with it.
