There are a couple of feral cats living behind my house who are constantly beating up on my cats. I've contacted the humane society and animal control but no one's ever been out to capture them.

I was thinking of getting a low-powered BB or pellet gun and instead of using BBs or pellets, using small bits of rock salt and aiming for the hind quarters of the cats. Not so cruel as an actual metal projectile and not life threatening in the thigh.

You can probably capture the feral cats using a raccoon trap that you can borrow from animal control. Once they are captured it will be up to you to either take them to animal control or release them very far away. Another good thing you can do is make sure the next cat that you adopt has a little wild breed in him or her like a Manx or a Lynx mix. I had the same problem many years ago.

Oh no. Please don't use a BB Gun on them. :( I would put the patience into trapping them humanely.

Besides, Feline Leukemia is an airborne disease so if they've been in close contact with your cats already, there's no way to prevent it. I used to work at an animal shelter and I've lost 2 cats myself to leukemia. I had one cat and then adopted a feral cat and it turns out he tested positive any by the time we got his test results back, my other cat contracted it and they both had to be put down when they got really ill. :(

Don't let your cats out until you figure out how to solve the problem, and in the meantime, try to trap them if you can.

Good news everyone!

I contacted animal control and they'll be setting some traps this spring. When they do, they'll contact me and I'll have to keep my cats inside.
