My current fixation is lasers.

Here are some interesting videos about them:

I have bought and will get a couple 5mW lasers in a couple weeks, and I'll probably make a Youtube video of them. The beams are supposed to be visible in the dark, so I think that will be cool.

Then, please tell me what it is short for :) LASER is not a word, nor is Modem, or LED...

and modem is modulator/demodulator and LED is light emitting diode

Come on! Stop trying to trick me and trick me!

kids, usually "and" isn't acronymized. These are exceptions, not the ruses.

The two lasers I've bought from ebay are both 5milliWatts in power, but one is 532nanometers (green) and the other is 650nanometers (red). When the beams intersect, I'm thinking that the point of intersection would appear to be (532+650)/2 = 591nm (yellow) and with 10mW of power.

I dislike it when my internet freezes and causes double posting.

To originating poster:

Lasers, at the current technology are totally impractical for weapon use. A mirror will "bullet proof" anything against a laser attack. Also the energy required to get a beam to do damage to a solid surface is very high. It is more efficient to throw rocks, which is what a kinetic energy weapon does. So far the flying bullet and the exploding shell are the best ways of applying energy in a hostile fashion.

The best things lasers are for is driving cats crazy...;)

If you really want a dedicated laser, see if Edmund Scientific is still around. I'm sure they have a web site, if they are. They had them back in the 70s, at least.

Speaking of lasers, you might not believe me but I have been shot at by real weapon lasers before by the FBI. They were in my house and shot at me twice and luckily missed. The FBI is 200 years ahead in technology. They also have laser satellites and fired on two different occasions with that as well. They are after me because I caused things to happen and destroyed the economy. I didn't mean to destroy the economy or cause the flood or that recent suicide in New York. I just predicted it and it happened. I influence events because of my psychic dreams and that's why the gov is after me. I am terrified (but excited at the same time) about Wednesday when I go to Hollywood for my art because there will be FBI agents at the airport and they threatened to do something on the plane I am going to be on. The thought insertion told me this. Sometimes I see the gov agents and then they cloak and disappear into thin air. They have cloaking technology! I've heard their voices when they were in my house many times, plotting what to do to me.

I think that ruveyn is right, while it is possible in the lab to get a laser to do something unpleasent such as set fire to cloth or cut holes in metal. I think that a few pence worth of siver paint will beat an expensive laser.

But I know that lasers are useful for directing some more conventional weapons, there are some missiles which will home into the light reflected off the target if you point a laser at the target.

If you know your classic doc who there was one episode in which Daleks are on a planet which has a machine which sucks in electric power, they soon change from their normal death ray (a laser ?) to a machine gun.

Hmm, soldiers, tanks, tents, mortars and missiles wearing mirrors for armour. Beats camouflage...
