I'm driven by instinct too, part of that instinct is to enjoy my place at the top of the food chain with the chicken sandwiches. :thumright:

I would think that the average chicken does NOT want to be exterminated.

If they are truly non-sentient they don't want anything.

If they are sentient then it gets more complicated on an individual level. We can't get inside their heads. Their experience of reality is shaped by different needs (or manifestations of the same basic needs we have!), different senses. So we'll fail to compare our subjective experience of reality to theirs. In judging them we might be looking for some visible signals of 'emotion' or whatever your measure of worthiness is that they don't have, or don't show in a typical, learned, human way.

It's impossible to know.

I am not bothered by the idea of killing animals for food, per se. What bothers me, and causes me to choose vegetarian meals quite often, is the conditions that animals have to suffer nowadays. For the most part, the chickens we eat aren't happily clucking away in the fresh country air, until one day someone comes out and wrings their neck. Chickens are packed in little crates, up against zillion of other chickens, and spent their whole lives like that. When they are little, they have their beaks sliced off so they won't be able to peck at the other chickens who are pressed up against them, and if you think they are anesthesized for that, think again. It's horrific, really. Same thing for all the other animals. They probably DO want to die; I sure would.

I don't know what farming has become in other countries, but in the U.S. it's this horribly unnatural, eco-UNfriendly business, which is destroying the environment in many ways, in addition to being inhumane. Because of that, I go through vegetarian phases, but it's hard to keep up, because the rest of my family won't go within ten feet of a bean. So, my meat-eating is limited, and when there is a choice, I always choose meat that was raised in a more humane way, if I can afford it. That can be tricky, though, because there is a lot of misleading packaging.

I'm sure your right, except for chickens that are kept in factory farms I don't think any would be suicidal.

Might be... the original statement of them wanting it would be the crappiest justification ever considering we are responsible for their condition in the first place.

Good post, by the way. I'm pretty much the same except I go between lacto-ovo-vegetarian (which isn't much of an improvement but practical =/ ) and vegan.

No animal wants to die, the instinct to survive is built into all organisms. As well as the instinct to eat meat and/or vegetables.

...and if nature did not want us to eat chicken, then nature would never have produced the ingredients to curry.

If chickens were genetically modified to have no brains at all, and so not feel pain, would PETA finally shut up?

I guess many chickens are only alive just to feed humans, though this should be a responsibility of us humans to treat them with respect before we tear apart their flesh with our teeth. They want their species to continue on, and humans in general want a tasty nutritious food. Plus I have heard a lot of question about chickens inteligence in that they can run around for I think it was minutes after decapitation.
