I see no reason why I should have to spend time and energy doing that in order to have an environment here that's reasonably civil to/about women.

It pretty much is civil to and about women. Except certain a**holes on the L&D forum and some places on PPR. By now you should be able to tell who the dicks are and avoid their posts. Why read what you know is going to upset you?

Are you trying to stop typed words that you can easily avoid or are you trying to change their thoughts? It's a lot more trouble to read something than it is to scroll past it.

There are people here whose opinions send me through the roof, and I usually just avoid them unless they post in a thread I post on. I know that the world is full of people with opinions and ideas that I hate and I can't avoid them in face to face confrontations, so why should a forum be any different?

I haven't seen anybody here post (except jokingly) that women should stay home and out of the workforce and submit to their husbands etc. I've seen a few who hold that idea for religious reasons and have argued with them about it, as have other people and one actually left over that.

But what is the big deal when somebody is so freaking bitter at women that they put us all in a made up category in their heads and type it?

Also, if you start moderating comments that are sexist, then it's going to turn into anything a female complains about and calls sexist is removed because it's sexist. While most women completely disagree with the doofuses who post that crap about us, it doesn't actually upset most of us. It's usually somebody with not much of a life, typing it from their bedroom in their mother's house, who has hardly any decent contact with women, so they don't know from jack about us for real. Also, a couple of them have the inability to actually change their minds about us, if you know what I mean.

Can you give me an example, maybe some quotes, of the kind of thing you want moderated?

Also, there are some women out there who object to the words girl, gal, lady, chick, etc. Anything except woman and female is gonna get her panties in a knot and then that's gonna be brought into the whole thing. It can spiral down into attitudes and everything else.

Why not just tell them off and avoid the thread?

Nobody has a right to not be offended. We have a right to tell them what we think about their opinion. We have a right to avoid them. We have a right to report it, although sometimes that gets out of hand and turns into something you would find on a first grade playground, but how exactly does some asswipe's opinion actually hurt you? He has no control over anything in your life, nor any power over you or obviously, any female in real life. What exactly does it hurt to let them vent?

Just for context, I run an Autism support group in Seattle, and a lot of my willingness to extend the benefit of the doubt comes from my experience of Aspie social obliviousness first hand.
For example, there is a guy that comes to some of the meetings that not only doesn't really get personal space, but has really poor hygiene, and is clearly on the lower functioning end of the spectrum. Compounding this, he makes a point of trying to talk to any women that happen to show up, and between the too close standing, the weird questions and the hygiene, most find it off putting, and me or one of the other organizers try and keep an eye on him to intercept him when we see him buttonholing a woman who clearly doesn't want to talk to him. From an outside perspective, it looks really bad, and for the woman on the receiving end, I'm sure it's annoying as hell if not worse, but to describe it as 'predatory' would not be accurate either, just clueless and low functioning in an unfortunate combination.
I try to be sensitive to that dynamic online as well, as I'm more aware than most of how even fairly aggressive seeming behavior can actually have a perfectly innocent cause, especially in a medium where social cues are even less existent than normal.

I was trying not to chime in, but I have to and agree with Dox. I have taught a software engineering class to autistic college students and I've been involved in other projects with everyone from super high-functioning and gifted to profoundly disabled. Some things are like a blind person bumping into you - it's just one of those things that goes with the territory. And, so many autistics have had so many games played with them, that it's like they have been living in another world. So, oddities should be tolerated and things beyond oddities we should look at as mentoring opportunities, if at all possible. We've all taken a beating, just different beatings. So, let's be tolerant of the diverse results of our beatings.

OOM, I do not 100% agree with your assertion that we do not have the right to not be offended and here is why. Government wise you're right but private wise I say no.

If you look at this amendment it was originally applied to Congress only. The interpretation has been expanded to mean governmental entities like the state or the city. They can't violate this 1st amendment because it is the law of the land that applies to all of government.

Here is the thing. Freedom of Speech does not apply to private entities including websites like wrongplanet. Alex sets the policy of this website and the mods carry out this policy. He can limit whatever speech he wants on this website as he is the owner of this website. Like you said one can avoid others who offend us. StarvingArtist, Tarentella and others are organizing a petition to Alex. He can accept their petition and have the mods be more aggressive with their not allowing of the sexism.

Alex can confer this right unto the women of wrongplanet and choose to enforce the moderation of the sexism because any power not delegated to the federal government is either conferred onto the states or to the people. In this case, this power is conferred onto Alex to grant this right in this particular instance or not.

Freedom of Speech is not protected here in the constitutional sense. Freedom of speech and whatever limits exist to it are set forth by Alex. Those who claim in this case that one is violating someone else's freedom of speech according to what is enumerated in our constitution and the Bill of Rights is wrong.

I only just joined this site yesterday, but if it is true that the site owner is leaving women to fend for themselves against misogynistic comments then this cannot go on unchallenged. This forum is intended to bring people together and help each other share their thoughts, issues and problems and it's not just men who get diagnosed with a pervasive developmental disorder. Women should be able to freely post without being singled out by misinformed, backwater, hateful people who go unmoderated in an effort for a "survival of the fittest" mentality.

That was pretty good, but try to generalize more about all women next time; right now it's just a personal insult using a gendered pejorative, not actually a sexist comment per se.

Also, documented.

You should probably just ignore it instead of making a big deal about it and making threats. Besides I would say that to your face any day of the week and knock your ass to the curb if you tried to lay a finger on me lol

sure you would, anonymous internet troll. i'm sure you're very brave and strong IRL. that's very believable, judging by your behaviour.

Right, and I would agree with him doing it if it were a majority of active female posters here. So far I've only seen a handful support this. I'd also like to find out what the exact behavior is that they are wanting to ban.

It's a few guys in the Love and Dating subforum who make generalized comments about women and a couple who make comments about feminism on Philiphy, Politics and Religion subforum. Not an overall tone of the forum. Trust me.

I simply gave you what I thought were helpful tips about feeling safer. I also told you how standing up to people made me feel and how not doing it made me feel. That's all. I was actually about to post and tell him he's an ass, but I really don't think I will now.
