Stop trying to talk trash on the internet, you look ridiculous. Put the bottle down and go to bed.

Good advice.

Now that you bring that up, where is Tequila? Haven't seen him around lately!

Temporary lock.

It appears a troll has been coming to this thread last night and I need to wait for others to deal with him properly.

The point is though people try to make things a 1st amendment issue when it is not. Freedom of speech does not apply here because wronplanet is not a governmental entity.

Just for context, I run an Autism support group in Seattle, and a lot of my willingness to extend the benefit of the doubt comes from my experience of Aspie social obliviousness first hand.
For example, there is a guy that comes to some of the meetings that not only doesn't really get personal space, but has really poor hygiene, and is clearly on the lower functioning end of the spectrum. Compounding this, he makes a point of trying to talk to any women that happen to show up, and between the too close standing, the weird questions and the hygiene, most find it off putting, and me or one of the other organizers try and keep an eye on him to intercept him when we see him buttonholing a woman who clearly doesn't want to talk to him. From an outside perspective, it looks really bad, and for the woman on the receiving end, I'm sure it's annoying as hell if not worse, but to describe it as 'predatory' would not be accurate either, just clueless and low functioning in an unfortunate combination.
I try to be sensitive to that dynamic online as well, as I'm more aware than most of how even fairly aggressive seeming behavior can actually have a perfectly innocent cause, especially in a medium where social cues are even less existent than normal.

I was trying not to chime in, but I have to and agree with Dox. I have taught a software engineering class to autistic college students and I've been involved in other projects with everyone from super high-functioning and gifted to profoundly disabled. Some things are like a blind person bumping into you - it's just one of those things that goes with the territory. And, so many autistics have had so many games played with them, that it's like they have been living in another world. So, oddities should be tolerated and things beyond oddities we should look at as mentoring opportunities, if at all possible. We've all taken a beating, just different beatings. So, let's be tolerant of the diverse results of our beatings.

I really don't think that behaviors that are abusive to women should be tolerated as "diverse results of our beatings" -- and it's particularly odd if WP is intolerant of racism and homophobia, but not sexism.

I can tell you straight up that if a woman who had been sexually abused were confronted and "buttonholed" in such a manner -- and many women have been sexually abused -- the effect would not just be annoying but in some regard traumatic. And while I am not surprised at the profound insensitivity of some autistic men to this experience, I do not think that this insensitivity should be left to rule the day.

Well, to the original quoted poster: How many women on WP do you figure want to risk fights and abuse for merely raising the subject? I think it's entirely understandable if most lay low and decide they'd rather simply deal with the ambient sexism. But it doesn't mean that they should have to do that.

It does mean that there's a serious problem: the issue can't even be raised without women being slagged off appearancewise/sexually and accused of misandry. And because mods aren't allowed to step in at that point, the threads get heated and wind up being locked, and the overall sentiment appears to be "threads about misogyny cause trouble". When of course it's not the threads that are the problem; it's the unfettered misogyny that's the problem.

Who's trying to make it a 1st Amendment issue? Has anyone actually brought it up in this thread?

He pops up in PPR occasionally when thomas81 baits him with some UKIP bashing, but he's been pretty quiet lately, I think he may be a bit beaten down at this point.

i think what has happened to me since i created this thread (pretty much exactly, like to the letter, what i underlined and bolded) is a perfect illustration of just what tarantella is talking about here.

that one responder and what he said is not the extent of the flak i have taken for creating this thread, and for speaking my mind about sexism before on this site. i have the temerity to publicly identify as a feminist and try to tell people that not all feminists hate men, and that i have a desire to see women treated with the same respect that other groups are here--and i get labelled a man-hating uppity b***h, get told i'm an ugly troll, get mocked for not being on a date in 10 years and for dealing with street harassment and being followed home by strangers in a cowardly way, etc etc etc. the mocking of me is not even contained in this thread, it was going on in several threads last night. people who don't even know me talking about how "irrationally emotional and hyperbolic" i'm being on the issue, and how i'm obviously unbalanced because i think all men are evil, how all this sexism is imaginary and a result of my past somehow (which they know nothing about). just ridiculous BS. if this site didn't have rules specifically against it, and if they could do it anonymously, my inbox would be full of rape and death threats right now. ask any woman who has ever published anything IRL or online about feminist issues and you will hear the same thing--no matter how "un-radical" and sensible and not full of hatred of men are the things they write. being a feminist and trying to create positive change for women makes you a target. just recently a student feminist activist at a university here in ontario was beaten one evening after stepping out the front door of her house on the night before an MRA event that was supposed to be happening at the school that she and other activists had been opposing. one of the male activists saw her online and that she was planning to be involved in a protest of the event he was supporting, and so he tracked her down and beat her up in her front yard (he knew her name and said it to her before he hit her--presumably to make sure she was the right woman to beat--he was unknown to her, but he had her name and address). this is what we get when we try to have a voice.

i would also like to say to all the people reading this who want to shut me up--i am the sort of person that, when i find an issue that i think is important and people try to dissuade me from it, the more determined i become. so keep telling me to shut up and go away and stop whining about "non-existent" sexism--it's great motivation for me and will keep me propelled into action. and if you want to threaten me or call me a fat ugly lesbian or whatever--you are just making it easier for the mods to ban you, but if it's worth it to you just to tell me how much you hate me, then go right ahead. then you can go find somewhere else on the internet to hate women more openly, if there is such a place.

Being oblivious to social cues is now "abusive to women" and lumped in with racism and homophobia?

I agree, shut her up with calm, rational arguments against her positions, not stupid hit and run insults; it's more effective all around.

you're delightful, did you know that? quoting me and then talking about me in the third person in a women's discussion thread. classy.
