It's actually *not* been banned in the U.S., unfortunately - it's in every commercial brand of permanent and semi-permanent hair dye, here (as well as every "salon"-brand permanent dye). I WISH the idiots at the USFDA would ban it and force chemical companies to find a less-toxic/safer alternative, ffs!

Oops! You beat me to it.

On the subject of Sodium laureth sulphate, I have stopped buying toothpaste containing it (very rare toothpaste) in the hope that it was the reason I was getting mouth ulcers. So far so good, and its been a few months, but that could be a co-incidence.

I got canker sores all the time, from the time I was a kid. I couldn't go a week without one. I figured it was just meant to be (funny how we just accept things). I switched toothpaste to something natural and they stopped. Occasionally, I'll have to use a different toothpaste and I almost always get a sore.

I can't use SLS in hair products either. It hurts my scalp. I had no luck with the conditioner only method. I used baking soda for a while, but even with a honey rinse, it dried out my hair. Works to clean it though. I then tried castile soap, I used it straight, and it was a mess. Then I read that you have to dilute it. Ah! That worked! So now I use pure organic castile soap, diluted about 1:10 in water.

You can brush your teeth with the castile soap too, doesn't taste good, but cleans so very well. Just one drop, or else you'll be foaming at the mouth, that stuff's concentrated.

As far as black hair dye is concerned I do a patch test every time even if it's the same product.
Scary what can happen.

Mouth ulcers are often caused by lack of minerals, and stress depletes them. My mouth is full of ulcers today and 2 days ago I had a meltdown.

Thanks. I eat very little meat, so that could be a factor. I do eat cheese though, but its worth monitoring my b12 intake.

I do also tend to get them more if my life is more hectic and stressfull too.

The sfs-free toothpaste I found is weleda, and it tastes like anniseed, which is also nicer than the minty ones, so thats a bonus.

Thanks for sharing! I currently make my own laundry soap and cleaning products, so this great to add to my list.

Lack of zinc causes it also. Also if you have a stressful life you're likely to also lack magnesium.

I've heard of SLS in hair products, actually. My roommate uses baking soda and apple cider vinegar to wash her hair. I've heard of using other things, too, like coffee, lemon juice and beer. I just use inexpensive drugstore shampoo and don't wash my hair every day. Thoughts?

What does that shampoo contain?

I use Suave's Coconut Shampoo. I haven't had any problems, and I'd be surprised if I did.

Here's an interesting read: http://thebeautybrains.com/2009/08/27/whats-really-not-true-about-your-shampoo/

Now i use Avalon Organics Thickening shampoo. It got many great reviews from iherb and that's why i bought it.Excellent price too.It is great but i got bored of it now,i use it for 6 months, that's how much time it lasted until now. Before that i used Apivita Propoline shampoo for hair loss(not that i lose hair but to prevent-i will also buy minoxidil but not propecia). Before that i bought Revivogen. It was really great my hair grew very fast and got longer very fast.I don't know what shampoo to buy now, even though Avalon is great,i have been using it for 6 months and got bored.Probably Jason Biotin shampoo or Burt's Bees.Or the other Prorpoline i have not tried(even though it has SLS).I will also buy biotin capsules and Maxi Hair capsules.

yup, it was a coincidence, not the sodium laureth sulphate to blame here. Got more mouth ulcer, and yup - stress.
