I don't know about that. Most of us were raised to believe that honesty is the best policy, beauty is on the inside, money isn't everything, etc. etc. etc., and most of us don't seem to have any trouble outgrowing those beliefs.

Not to mention people that were raised in racist/homophobic homes. I know I was, and I'm far from racist and am bisexual.

Seriously, it's not that hard to overcome negative upbringing. You just first have to understand why it's negative.

Exactly. You have to understand why it's negative first. Problem is, I know too many dips**ts who can't "logic" themselves out of a paper bag let alone change their worldview. 8O

BTW, congrats on being one of the smart ones.

It hasn't been my experience that people are raised with those beliefs. Most kids I know are raised to be self-obsessed, narcasisstic brats. YMMV.

And their are certain parent-instilled beliefs some people won't shake for anything. Religion, for example.

I was told such things ad nauseam, but quickly noticed it had nothing to do with the way most people actually act.

Good point. My father is racist, homophobic, bigoted and a bag of chips - I've outgrown it fast enough.

Chivalry is a simple extension of what most pair-bonding animals do. Instead of dropping a dead animal at your feet to show that he is capable of offering you sustenance and would make a suitable mate, he is showing he can make your life easier. Sure it is silly, but almost everything in the mating game is. It is just a display that has taken on gentlemanly tones. So next time I drop my kerchief on a cobbled street to keep your feet from getting horse dung on them, you better damn well appreciate it.

I better appreciate it? That's laughable.

Women aren't so helpless that they can't open their own doors, or pull out their own chairs. We aren't so shy that we are incapable of ordering our own food.

Teach children to help those in need... not to ignore the single father struggling with kids so they can open a f***ing door for a woman holding nothing.

I'm sorry if I'm not meant to be posting in this section, but I agree 100% with this. I've never seen why women should be treated better than men, surely it should be equal?

It's good to see a woman saying it, too.

I didn't put "Women only" because I don't mind if men give their opinion. :-)

It's funny that you assume the comment upset me. I rolled my eyes, responded, then promptly forgot all about it.

The problem is the assumption behind chivalry is that women are less capable than men, which I do not think translates to women being treated "better" than men. Chivalry is just another way for men to assert their presumed superiority to women, but it is done in a way that makes it almost impossible for women to find faults with it. Just look at half of the responses that women who stand in defense of chivalry gave, and notice how our own chivalrous gentleman sluice expects women to be grateful for something so trivial in spite of being fully aware that it's all "just a display." If I didn't know any better, I'd think a chivalrous gentleman was just another synonym for the notoriously passive-aggressive Nice Guy™.

I was just having fun with the subject, note the archaic example. Guys don't view women as inferior cause they hold a door open or carry a package. Almost everything a guy does for a women is to impress. If you are not impressed than maybe you should say so.

Good. I do say something if I think they are doing it just because I'm a woman and not because it's just nice to not let a door slam in someone's face.
