Should I learn Esperanto?

It looks like an interesting little language, and coz my curiousity has been kindled, I just thought I could have some fun learning it. It seems ok-ishly easy to learn, and I just wanted to know what you guys here would think.

I have long been intrigued by Esperanto! There was a wave of interest in it in the late 60's and early 70's and then I thought it died out!

I'm sure it would be a very interesting language to learn and you could practice using it on some specialized forums. It's not really gonna become a wide spread language though, as some people (myself included) had orginaly thought.

I advise you to go to http://www.lernu.net, where you can learn Esperanto easily and for free.
We could write to each other in Esperanto, if you want to.
There are music bands who sing in Esperanto. My favorite one is Persone.

A friend of mine just told me about a film entirely in Esperanto, starring William Shatner, called Incubus. It sounds like the most fantastically bad film ever made, so I am going to hunt it down.

I say if you're interested, do it! That's the best reason to learn anything. I'm learning Irish simply because I feel like it, and I'm having a great time.

I want to make up my own language. It would be about as useful as Esperanto.

Mosquitos
Dead batteries
My broken-down car

No, I would suggest you learn a living language like French instead.

I want to learn Esperanto because I want to be able to express myself in a language other than english, because I have always wanted to travel, and personally am sick of french/german irregular verbs, conguntication and the like, I thought I might try Esperanto. I mentioned it to my french teacher at school, and she almost died, so that's oh-the-more-encouraging of my nutty pursuits. It seems a logical language, though I haven't yet heard it spoken as such. Saluton, amiko and esperanto/esperanton/esperantist seems to be the extent of my knowledge so far, so I'm interested. Perhaps I could be fluent in a few years!

You will be fluent in a few months, if not in a few weeks, but not in a few years!
What do you mean by "my french teacher [...]almost died"? Was it because she was over-pleased by the news, or because she thought that learning esperanto was utter-nonsense?

The fact that you're interested is reason enough, I think.

Actually the logical langauge to learn is lojban, but if you're interested in Esperanto and have the time, go for it!

Ain't no logic here! Aren't esperanto and lojban aiming for the same things? Culturally neutral, removing ambiguity?

But is the grammar of Esperanto based on predicate logic? Does a 'broken light bulb' in Esperanto refer to a bulb which emits broken light?

Ok, that's not really a feature so much as trivia. And I disagree with the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis because it ignores non-verbal thinking, but still, lojban is full of neat ideas!

Esperanto isn't really culturally neutral; it's biased towards European languages. But it does have more speakers than most other conlangs.
