1. If you figure it's not in your best interest to say something to someone, and someone else asks you why you didn't say anything, you have to say "because I didn't want to hurt them". This is always well accepted, even though people know perfectly well that you shut up in your best interest.

2. "Don't let me keep you" means "I won't let you keep me."

Please add your own...

What can be said topic

Yeah, these cliches. Standard speech for many humans.

My son uses the term "No offense", but I know exactly what he is saying. :x

"I'm just kidding." or "I was only joking." after a derogatory comment means, "I want to be nasty without being held accountable for what I said."

"How are you?" means "I don't really give a damn, I just want to score brownie points for asking."

"Am I fat?" means, "I really want sympathy, and in now way think I'm fat. Infact, I think the exact opposite of that but would appreciate your endorsement to make me feel better, despite the fact I'll disregard your opinion if you say anything other than me not being fat."
(People who genuinely think they're fat, from my experience, don't ask).

"Why is it that when people say 'with all due respect', what they really mean is 'kiss my a$$'?"

I have to disagree. When I tell people to leave me alone, I genuinely want to be alone. IDK if we're talking about NTs though.

I thought we were talking about double meanings people use. I learned on here when people say that, that's what they mean so no wonder my bf wouldn't leave me alone when I told him to. :x

Sometimes its hard to tell if there is a double meaning implied or not. There have been plenty of times when I will feel compelled to ask "What do you mean by that?" Not because I'm dense but because I don't want to give an inappropiate response.

Yeah, I always thought that was really strange.

A boyfriend I had once told me he "needed space" and needed to concentrate when he got the lead role in a theater production. So, of course I took him literally. He then broke up with me because I didn´t call him and "wasn´t there when he really needed me". Ah, people...who can understand them....

(By the way, Spokane Girl- off topic- I finally saw the movie "Benny and June" because you´ve mentioned it on WP. I loved this movie! :D I made a copy of it, so now I have it too.)
