impossible to answer. you'd have to see proof of diagnosis from everyone and the self-diagnosed would HAVE to get formal a diagnosis to make it credible.

I personally agree with some people on this post, it would be pretty difficult to see who has autism or not....

I definitely now know I have autism and I have the official diagnosis to prove it :D yay HFA :D but my teachers have mistaken me a few times that I have aspergers, it even says on my school reports... It doesn't make sense when I didn't speak until the age of 3 and a half

it would just be easier to just PM the person and most of them will tell you infact all of them, I'm not too sure unless you ask :)

I think I'm about 70% sure I have at least some traits, but am I a full-blown aspie? Who really decides anyway, I may not be stereotypical but if you're on the spectrum, however mild, you're fissured from the general population.

Obviously there are a few clear-cut cases (age1600, the kid obsessed with straps, Kevin I, the guy with the Lost in Space Robot as his picture) but the vast majority of WPers seem to be pretty neurally ambiguous. There are easily hundreds of regular contributors to this message board, how many of them do you think might actually be afflicted with autism/Asperger's vs. the members with other social issues who've convinced themselves they have it? Just curious.

Just by the numbers, 1 in 100, 3,300,000 in the USA. the 30,000 total members is a worldwide number.

Many are NT parents, spouses, so from my rough math skills, everyone here amounts to .25% of the available USA Autism pool. Most members never posted, or once, and are not active. Only about 1% are very active. That is hundreds from a worldwide pool thought to be up to 10,000,000.

99.75% of confirmed Autistics do not know of this place, Girls were never counted till a few months ago, official, but are half of WP. Most Professionals thought they had Girl Syndrome.

Most HFA, AS, have never heard of Autism, or related to it. That gives an active on WP ratio of 1/33,000 confirmined cases.

In and out of the closet topic

I knew it would eventually come to this. Apparently my "official" Dx is no longer valid. Now, because of my articulate posts and great communication skills, I no longer qualify as autistic.

Have I been cured? :(

I have to laugh, I can express emotion. If the OP knew me in real life...  :P  :?

I don't have AS. I just have an NT personality disorder with many aspie traits.

I'm not sure of what your question is. Are you asking how many here, that have not been diagnosed, or are you asking everyone? Are you asking about Where the Autism (classic) ends and the Aspergers begins? Or do you assume that Autism is completely different than Aspergers, therefore, should be two different diagnosises(etc. ) so you would cut the spectrum in half and then still qestion where autism ends what the hell is in between, and and where Aspergers begins?
All I know is that I have been diagnosed with this thing called "Aspergers" and the definition of it describes me to a "T", in all of my lifes struggles and difficulties. I am more than the Aspergers though. "Aspergers" is just a term that references a set of common chacteristics in a set group of people. It does not define each person specifically.

Well, you give some examples of people, but there are lots of offically dx'ed people here who also seem really really 'high functioning' by that standard (for lack of a better way to put it). Also, over the internet I think it's very hard to tell unless people describe specific things about their life. If you read Amanda Baggs' writing (that isn't about her specific difficulties), there's no 'indications' that she has any 'low functioning' (again, for lack of a better way to say it) type difficulties, even though she does.

Maybe we should have a competition. Then the winner would be able to claim:

"Im an aspie. An Aspie Aspie. I'm the only Aspie in the village."

You can't really tell online. I also don't see why people who are not autistic would post on an autism forum, unless they're really interested in autism.

Or they know someone with it such as their partner or spouse or sibling, etc.

I'm still mystified by my own brain (or seemingly...lack thereof) to this day.

According to every neuropsych eval i've had...I am *classic* NVLD and we can debate about whether NVLD and AS are the same conditions or not until the cows come home.

Though I personally have every reason to believe there's something wrong with my brain (in particular....my long term memory) which makes "classic NVLD" pale in comparison in terms of how debilitating it usually is.

In other words....I really should be on another online community for people with "Disorder X" but considering i'm seemingly the only one suffering from said disorder....no such community exists

This is very similar to the post in the "random discussion" thread where there is a poll that asks the same thing....I wonder if they are in league..or if one poster followed the example of another...
Whatever the case...what does it matter? This is a forum for people who can relate to variations of the same common traits...or friends/partners/relatives of people who exhibit these traits..or might have seen these traits within themselves...Were the OP to employ some sort of professional who was as wisened to the autistic spectrum as can be, I am sure that professional would have difficulty telling who really was and who wasn't....based upon what they read on the board...For all practical purposes, despite all the traits I do have, I am sure that there are those who would be more inclined to focus on my non-AS-stereotypical behavior...blah blah blah....All I can say is that i do not claim to be anything that I don;t think I am...and I do not lie about any of my traits. :?

Well probably 70%, 20% are family members with loved ones on the spectrum, 9% are suffering from other disorders that mimic Aspergers CAPD is one, 1% are looking for attention.
