I know these are stims but was curious what other people on the spectrum did this (I've done the pacing alot lately it's nauseating after doing it though!!) :-) Sometimes I sway and it feels like I'm going to fall over LOL!

Yup I do both, mostly without even realising. Never understood what other people have against it, though :?

I get very nervous when giving public presentations and so have a habit fo being a bit active on my feet, moving this way and that while speaking. It was oen of the numerous little aspie signs I noticed when I first started examining the possibility of having AS.

I am entirely aware whether I sway or not.

I definitely pace around like crazy though...Sometimes all over the place...sometimes in confused loops...sometimes in nervous tight little circles.

I've always had a thing for pacing. It drives my mother nuts. Pacing relaxes me. I love to pace around my basement, talking to myself and getting lost in my own little world.

Sometimes people point out to me that I have a tendency to sway back and forth when I have to stand for long periods of time.

Yeah, I pace a lot. I also pace the exact same path, and I also speed up my pacing when I am on the phone. I also sway back and forth when I am standing still. :)

Yes.

If I've been out for a walk, been exploring and had vigorous exercise these behaviours aren't as severe.

These repetitive "stereotyped" behaviours seem to get worse when I feel as though I'm "hemmed" in or "trapped" in one place for a long time.

I saw these behaviours in a Raccoon at the zoo.
The keeper said that pacing around was a coping mechanism in reaction to stress and that this activity released endorphins into the Raccoon's bloodstream. I can sort of appreciate how the raccoon felt.

The Raccoon had recently been moved from another zoo, with a tiny enclosure, to a bigger one.
The Racoon was still trying to adjust and was pacing about a lot.
The Keepers tried to help the Raccoon by giving him plenty of toys to play with and a female Raccoon so that he didn't get lonely in the new enclosure.

The female Racoon looked much happier and calmer.
She didn't pace or sway at all.
She'd come from a zoo with a large enclosure.

I do a lot of pacing. I guess that it helps me to keep my mind off any problems that I might have, at any given time. It's almost like Obsessive Compulsive Walking.

I sway, pace and rock.... not to mention flapping, rubbing my hands together and compulsively rubbing my knees.

I pace alot around the house even while on the computer I get up frequently just to walk around. I get an URGE to do it and it feels like the longer I stay seated the more impatient I get.

Waiting for anything, a bus, a subway - I pace. I count my steps usually too. Standing still is near impossible for me. If I have to stand in one spot I will sway side to side (having a baby, it's presumed natural. Dunno if it is or not but I do it) or in a turning motion.
Sitting, I rock to and fro.

My feet are always twisting too. Circles or bobbing.

It's just what I do. I don't waste too much time trying to figure out why. haha.

[an aside: I discovered last year- when I had to wait HOURS in the OB office for my appointment- that sitting in a chair patiently only encourages the staff to forget you are waiting. Whereas pacing back and forth in front of the secretaries desk, over and over and over - gets you in to see the doctor pretty quickly! :D ]

I rock back and forth when I'm sitting. It seems to make me feel calmer. I have to keep in motion and can't stand being held in one place. It drives my wife crazy that I won't stand still when she is talking to me. She thinks I'm not listening to her. When she (or anyone hugs me) I feel very uncomfortable and trapped. My wife likes to rub my neck and stuff and that drives me insane. I can't stand repetitive noises or touching.

I pace when I'm imagining or thinking. It helps the whole process. Also when I'm excited :)
