Anyone have had it? My parents are under the impression that my rather tepid Aspergers comes as a result of having had Kawasaki Disease when i was younger. Just curious if there is any truth to this. I asked my psychiatrist about it. But he pretty much gave me a politician's answer, that he wasn't sure, but anything was possible.

Isn't that what John Travolta and his wife thought caused their son Jett's autism?

yeah. you know. i read something about that too on wikipedia. It sounded like his seizures were caused by the kawisake disease, or something like that. I don't know. I was just curious. It's funny. My obsession is writing, and i started writing like only two or three months after getting the disease.

Why would your parents think that without any evidence? Asperger's is more than likely genetic.

Um mostly because it is genetic and nobody as far back as i can remember in my family really has it. and kawisake disease was such an odd thing to have as a child that they wondered if that was a correlating factor.


They are fine with me having it. But my whole family is a curious bunch.

I did ask a doctor. and he told me it could be but he doesn't know.

My coworkers and I, were just talking about it, a week ago.

This really isn't relevant. My son is the first person in my family to be classified as autistic, but I am Asperger's - just not officially. In fact, my family is horrified when I point out that I easily fit the criteria. To them I am just hypersensitive and sometimes difficult. It's very likely someone else in your family was affected but just stayed under the radar because they were able to compensate and function well enough to manage.

Now that we know we have it in our family, we've been able to understand some of our more eccentric family members. All of them were able to be quite successful in their chosen fields - they were just not known for being well loved by their peers (or in some cases the rest of the family).

Kawasaki cannot cause autism, but its conceivable that the high fever and autoimmune problems can cause brain damage that can mimic autism.

If what you have is truly autism/aspergers then you most likely got it from a parent. Your mother could also be a carrier and not have any symptoms if she got it from her father.

yeah my grandfather, on my moms side, died when she was really young. my mom is definitely the weak link when it comes to . . . being different. She's got depression and is really introverted and such.

I seriously doubt it has anything to do with your autism. Most everybody has some health condition or other and autistics are no exception. Heritability for autism is sky-high; so almost all of your case can most likely be blamed on your genes. But it's not impossible to be pushed over the border from "autistic traits" to autism proper if your mother was sick during pregnancy or otherwise had a hard pregnancy, or you were born prematurely. There is some environmental effect, though it has much more to do with how autistic you are, not whether or not you're autistic to begin with.

Yeah, my neighbor has Kawasaki disease...it makes him rev up his motorbike at 2 a.m. Hopefully he gets treatment soon.

No, it's what Scientology convinced them he had instead of autism, until it came out that it was indeed autism, even though Scientology's view is that autism does not exist.

I doubt this disease can form into autism. At a young age, I think they can be confused, but if it turns out to be autism when you get older, then it was autism all along.
