Is it right to beat a disabled person if they start with you

I have had a a few people with the opinion that if a disabled person starts a fight that it gives them the right to beat them to death.

Since disability is a wide spectrum, you could say they mean even the most slowest of minds to those who have no limbs to those who use a computer to talk through.

what do you think?

I can just picture someone disabled( as in using a wheelchair, a paraplegic) coming up to me and trying to punch my lights out.

It depends on the person. If the person is beating you and he is very strong and you have no way of restraining him or her from attacking you, you have the right to fight back to defend yourself. If they have a knife and are trying to kill you and they are just chasing you around your home to stab you to death, damn yeah you have the right to defend yourself.

It all depends on how disabled the person is or how they are disabled and how you define it.

I think I have the right to do anything I want. I also believe that if you see me beat up a one legged m***et in a wheelchair with an eye patch, you have the right to kill me. In fact, I believe that even if I get away with beating up that m***et, and you never knew about it, you still have the right to kill me.

That depends on the excessive force laws in your state. For example, if someone starts a fight with you, that is not a justification to stomp on their head when they are on the ground. If it is someone disabled, do what you have to do in order to defend yourself and nothing more than you have to. Even if you are defending yourself, fighting a disabled person is going to look bad to the cops and possibly a jury so take care not to get carried away.

Heh, well, do you know how much a power chair weighs? Those things could do some serious damage. (Except it would be unwise to try because they are also ridiculously expensive.)

If a person in a wheelchair started a fight with you, you could probably get out of it just by finding some rough terrain that they couldn't follow you across. In fact, that's what you should do in any case: Get out of the situation by whatever means possible.

I do not advocate fighting anybody, disabled or not, unless you're already cornered. Why? Well, if you're not too good at fighting, then you'll lose and get beaten up. And if you're good at it, then you'll beat them and they'll tell people that the scary crazy person beat them up and needs to be arrested/medicated/whatever. It's a lose-lose situation for you.

That's possibly the most ludicrous thinking I ever heard. Making the concept even more ridiculous is the fact they are talking about a disabled person. If a person in a wheelchair is shouting at you and punches you, there is no justification for attacking back because it is extremely easy to leave the situation.

Getting into a bar fight and killing another human being is not Self Defense. Self Defense is solely doing what you have to do to survive the situation and 99% of the time, walking away is what will keep you out of harm's way.

if a mouse tries to bite my toe when i am wearing a steel capped shoe, i would not ever consider stomping on the mouse because i am affronted by it's feeble and misguided aggression.

i would just step aside and watch and hope that the mouse calms down.

i have a soft spot for feeble people, and if one wanted to kill me, i would just step casually aside and watch with wonder what they do next, and wonder why they are so aggressive. i would hope very much that they do not have rabies or some other condition that spells their demise.

if my life is not in mortal danger, then i would not vanquish a feeble attempt to injure me. i would wonder what it was that makes them hate me and try to reconcile that, or else i would just leave their area completely with the hope that thet wake up and become sensible.

nature will extinguish those that are completely at odds with sensibility, and i would feel sorry for whatever life was acting in a way so inviting of a fatal disaster due to inappropriate and blind wrangling with healthy organisms.

No, if you believe you can actually beat them to death, then you are more able bodied than they are, so just get the away from them. Stay away from people who think it's ok, and if you are one of them, stay away from others entirely.

If someone starts a fight with me I usually punch them back with approximately equal force, but I'll stop if they stop, or I'll put them in a lockgrip.

For the record, I was attacked once by a very large man who had developmental disabilities while I working in a group home a few years back. He began by cursing at me and then threw a pair of very sharp scissors. I was not allowed to retaliate, and there were witnesses.

I was not employed there for long. This home was populated by very large, very violent developmentally challenged men with multidiagnoses, and of course all these diagnoses involved paranoia.

A few months ago the police were called to this home and one of the group home clients died after being subdued by three burly cops. Pepper spray was not used. Clearly he was out of control. The results of the autopsy were not made public, but the police were exxonerated from contributing to his death.

I mention this little anecdote because there are repercussions to attacking/being attacked by physically and/or challenged people. As some posters here wrote, use discretion/common sense.
