Just thinking about this question brings tears to my eyes even though it was nearly 30 years ago. I sat at a table on my own to eat my lunch every day and then sat alone in the cloakroom until the bell rang.

During lunch, I hung out with the goths, druggies, and other outcasts near the back of the gym where no one could see us smoking cigarettes (or, in my friends' cases, dealing pot and meth). I'd almost always show up late to my fifth/sixth period classes.

Being completely new to the district freshman year, I had a few semesters during the first couple of years of high school where I would have to sit by myself at lunch. Well not really by myself but I only knew one or two people to sit with and if they weren't there that day to have lunch or had to skip lunch period for some reason I was screwed (which happened a lot). I would've gone to the library but I think there was some stupid restrictions on students being there at that time. I think I would need a pass or something but I was too socially anxious to ask. Either way there was no way I could skip lunch due to my metabolism no matter how much I wanted to. The super sucky part about it is that the rules during lunch are REALLY strict. Once you enter the cafeterias for lunch period you're forced by the teachers on duty to stay in the cafeteria the ENTIRE period. No excuses. So there was no way for me to escape to the library after eating no matter how much I wanted to. Although that didn't stop some of my friends from slipping out. I just wasn't that lucky.

Ironically though it turns out one of those semesters didn't have to turn out the way it did. It turns out one semester (my loneliest one in fact) a whole bunch of theater kids I knew were eating in the other cafeteria during my lunch period. (We have one main cafeteria and one satellite cafeteria on opposite ends of the campus). I found out about this about mid-semester but I never made a move to go to the other cafeteria for lunch because I never had the guts to ask if I could sit with them. Pretty damn pathetic huh?

I'm really envious of my aspie friend. His mom was a teacher at my high school and he got to eat his lunches in her office without having to deal with the outside world. Makes me wish I had met him sooner than senior year.

Leave class: go straight to locker to get books for next 3 classes, immidiately go on a walk to the local newsagent, I wish I had known how to cope better then, fi i was in school now I would have stayed by myself more.

Freshman year, I think people felt sorry for me. They tolerated me when I hung out with them at lunch. Sophomore year, I either played pickup softball, or jammed with my one friend. Junior year, my few friends and I found a place to hang out and listen to music in one of the classrooms that no one was using. Senior year, my buddies and I had the bleachers in the gym.
Junior year, I discovered the joys of strength in numbers. There were some kids trying to pick on us individually, but when they tried to mess with us as a group, all we did was form a semi-circle around them with the meanest looks on our faces. Socially speaking, high school was a breeze after that. I just wish it had been a breeze academically. :/

I usually got a quick snack or skipped lunch altogether and did my homework in the library. If I had no homework, I just read random books there. During my later years in high school, I just went home for lunch every day.

My freshman year, I was in an advanced set of classes so we had a different lunch period than the rest of the freshmen so we all sat together. After eating, I would go sit outside my next class and read.

My sophomore year, I tried to sit with some guys but they would never save me a seat. One of the guys wanted me to pay him to let me sit at their table. I ended up getting a job for one of the people in exchange for letting me sit with them. After eating, I would sometimes hang around them or sit outside my next class reading.

My junior year, I usually just grabbed some food from the snack cart and ate it and spent the lunch period in my computer programming teacher's classroom doing some programming.

My senior year, I took an early morning class so I could fit all of my classes in before lunch.

God, high school sucked so bad. This thread does make me sad.

There there, please don't cry.

(Someone claimed in another thread that I started was the saddest thread he's ever seen. Maybe I'm a really sad person and I'm not aware of how sad I really am? But, there are many other people out there who cry due to sadness far more often than I do, so how could that be? Maybe these "sad threads" are just snapshots of the sad periods in my life that I've moved beyond.)

Barely any bullying happened at my school. People got along pretty well. You would see jocks and nerds hanging out together all the time, skaters and preps too. No real cliques or anything like that. We all just clicked in our own ways. Alot of the jocks were also nerds and band geeks. No one really cared about status or anything like that. It was great now that i think back on it.

I ate with my friends (the people I hung out with, but it was So boring). About 3/4 of the time in secondary school I skipped lunch and went to the library, or I was in detention. I did have a "best friend" until about Year 10 and she was great fun, and we often went off together and left the group (full of semi populars or populars or people like me on the fringes), but often I just wanted a rest.

I haven't eaten lunch in sixth form since about Christmas, I'm in the library. But I could go up to the common room and spend time with real friends who are interesting. It's just VERY noisy and I'm constantly on my guard so I don't start doing weird stuff or jerking my head when someone passes me or something.

I hid in the library, empty classrooms, in the hall next to my class, or in the counselors office. If I had to go into the cafeteria (when the teachers remembered that I was supposed to be in there or were not in the mood to pretend the I was, while sitting next to the classroom, a figment of their imaginations) I usually sat alone or with a few people and either hummed to myself with my fingers in my ears or tried to talk to talk to people that I could barely understand with all of the freaking yelling and clanging that went on in there.

I've managed to derail threads elsewhere because I shared an anecdote that seemed to be related to the subject matter, but I failed to predict how people would respond to it. That really annoys me sometimes because I was just trying to add to the conversation, not dominate it.

usually got my lunch and stood in the corner until I saw an empty table and sat there...a couple of times there where no empty table so I just sat on the floor and ate my lunch.
