Today I found out that my whole family thought that the bullying and poor treatment I received in Catholic School was because I wasn't Catholic. Seriously?! Some of my worst bullies at the Catholic Schools were non-Catholic and even they knew that something was wrong and off about me. Most of the things they attacked me was for my stimming, pacing, unusual quirks and OBVIOUS SIGNS OF HAVING AUTISM.

I still can't understand how my family could not see what so many of my peers and teachers obviously saw. I'm willing to bet even my teachers knew and have even tried to inform my parents I may have some sort of condition but my parents might have flat out ignored and denied whatever they said on the account of my differences.

And they really thought I would be safer and better off in the Catholic School. Really? I've been trying to tell my dad for years how terrible and lousy that experience was BECAUSE I AM AUTISTIC and it's slowly starting to get through to his head and all I had to do was tell him how little I've learned in that school which is truth.

I know this should be in the Haven. But let me get to the point. I'm angry that my parents have spent the majority of my life denying I have any problems when kids and teachers have easily pointed out that there is something wrong with me. It's done more harm to my life than good, regardless of intentions, to completely ignore my autistic symptoms or to care for how much they affect me in my daily life.

My dad even said today that he will not pay to have me diagnosed and treated for anymore conditions despite that fact that I may also have ADHD. Well this is just great. I have to go through life untreated for ADHD, depression, agoraphobia, and paranoia, just because he wants to be a cheapskate. Wonderful...

It sounds as if your family is deeply in denial. I'm sorry you have to endure this... it is their weakness and their failing as parents. Unfortunately, not everyone is a strong enough or big enough perosn to handle challenges to their own personal world order.

Do you have any means of getting yourself diagnosed? Most states have county clinics that have a sliding scale fee system...

When I had christian bullies, I scared the bejesus out of them by faking a conversation with my gothic boyfriend (it was a planned event) about craving the taste of blood, should we meet later on tonight about that? within earshot of my christian bullies. They resorted to talking behind my back, but stayed clear of me after that. Also I was beat up twice on the bus by some guys that were mad cuz I would not date them, well taking experience from my vampireism comment, I indirrectly told this other guy that I was a witch and brought my tarot cards to play with them in front of him. I saw the whites of his eyes...nothing freaks a bully out more than the possibility of occultic revenge. Even if you are not into that, they think you could be weird enough to pull it off.
mental warfare at the advanced level my friend....it works

As for OP's parrent problem, if you are in the states, when you are old enough to move out, move to massichusus (sorry, I cant spell for sh*t) cause they have state universal health care and you can get state insurance as soon as 6 weeks or 6 months after you move there.
Then you can get diagnosed and get treatment. And tell your parrents where to get off at. I hate it more than anything when a parrent rather deny than to help their own child who is struggling. It is sooo selfish, like they are saying, my genes are fine, you must be halucinating.
I just want to smack parrents who are like this.

If your family is not autistic then they have no idea how the whole autism bullying dynamic works.

They could be stupid, your user name raisedbyignorance alludes to this.

Maybe get someone official to talk to them about you. What about cannabis treatment? Its not too expensive and easy to get

I like Surfman's idea.

Yeah, your parents sound like they need to get their heads out of the sand and realize that religion doesn't permeate every single aspect of your life, whereas autism does. That's something my parents also don't get. Well, not the religion part, but they continue to treat it like it's a behavioral issue that can be rectified with a lot of effort, rather than a neurobiological issue which is sort of a lot different.

Parents are best dealt with using logic and substantiated proof. Ask the teachers to help you talk to them or something.

Families seem to have powerful inbuilt mechanisms to develop and promote collective stupidity.

Well I can tell you one thing. I went to a Catholic school for the same reason as you, I thought it would be better. after all Catholics are kind gentle people with good morals right? WRONG. I was also a Catholic, but I was bullied mercilessly by the other students. I don't think it matters whether you are a Catholic or not, if you are different from them in any way they will get you.

OK, uh...lemme clarify a few things for a few posters...

First of all, we're neither Catholic nor a religious family.

Second of all I only went to Catholic school for two years (7th and 8th grade) and I only went there because we were living in the urban city and my dad didn't like the idea of sending me to the public school system.

My anger is NOT with religion. My anger is with my parents who dismissed the bullying and discrimination I got for my autistic symptoms as being bullied for being non-Catholic. Even my sister was dumb enough to believe this. My association with the parish had nothing to do with my terrible treatment by the school. In fact I say that my non-parish status might have encouraged the school administration to look away and say nothing to my parents during the few times I did get in trouble because my status gave their schools more money through insanely hiked up tuition fees. This makes me angry because if these teachers had just spoken to my parents and say to them "I think your child may have autism", I could've been diagnosed much much sooner and I'm certain it would've made my life better (and saved me a lot of pain) if my parents had taken the obvious signs seriously. I mean if you're an 8th grade girl who would rather pace and stim against a wall for the majority of recess instead of going across the pavement where the rest of the school actually was for recess, that's a wakeup call that the teachers chose to sweep under the rug.

The issue here isn't religion. The issue here is using things such as religion to cover-up the real problems with myself which was the autism. I still can't understand how years of having poor eye contact and unusual pacing and stimming and communication issues didn't add up to anything in my parents head except for "bad parenting". :wall: Toddlers are getting diagnosed with AS at a rapid rate and here I am 27 years old and my parents are STILL IN COMPLETE DENIAL. WTF?! !
